Having played all of the games above I'd say it's difficult or unfair to choose as they all do different things
well
  • for sailing vessels, huge landscapes and a variety second to none "Virtual Sailor"
  • for great physics , manoeuvering and real world feel "SS2008"
  • for the cut and thrust of business and a nice sim falling half way between SS2008&VS "Ports Of Call"
  • for the excitement of racing and high performance handling "Virtual skipper"
  • for the thrill of combat and real "being there" tension and atmosphere "Silent Hunter" 3 & 4
  • for the admiral level tactical decisions & large fleet actions Distant Guns and the forthcoming Jutland

It's not really fair or productive to pitch one against the other as we are in such a small niche market, we should try and support as many of these great maritime sims as our wallets (and wives) will allow.

Somebody who chooses for virtual sailor obviously doesn't mind about realism.

I choose for SS2008 and POCsim3D (ports of call) beceaus I love the ship dynamics.

Ports of Call was/is an excellent game for Commodore Amiga and PC. Strange thing about that game was that if you did not paid extra money for piloting the ship to the harbour, you had to make it yourself.
I never paid any money for that, for obvious reasons :)
Nice simulation about controlling an containership-company, with all the ships etc. There was even some surprises when one the your ships getting to the iceberg-valley, and so on.
So my points for Ports of Call, nothing surpasses that, even with this modern technology :)

Oops, apparently there is 'new' Ports of Call. I gave my vote the original one, I suppose the new one will be not so great, sequels never are quite the same. So my vote to SS.

There are many new "Ports of Call"

A new version of the classic game developed by the same team (Rolf Deiter Klein/ Martin Ulrich)who put togerher the 80's original will be available next month that version has I think 19 ships and 90 ports!... find out more here (http://www.portsofcall-game.de/)

There is also POC XXL which is a 2D/3D hybrid and also a version of the classic game retooled to run on XP find out more here (http://www.portsofcall.de/)

Yep indeed some ships for VS have awfull dynamics, but if the creator of a vessel doesn't make them any better, then it's not the game's fault really.

I prefer SS, but I also bought VS (just to see what all the fuss was about), and there are some really nice ships out there with really good handling characteristics. Not many.. but enough to have a very diverse "fleet" to play around with. Most are dreadful though. And it shows that the ability of having 3rd party addons also attracts a lot of substandard work. No disrespect to any modeler, because everyone has to start somewhere, but a developer should at least set a basic standard. If a boat handles like a car, it has no place in a nautical simulator, as far as I am concerned. (unless it's an amphicar of course, but even that handles like a boat, in the water)  :)

But some authors just made a (often poor) model and - as far as I noticed - just used some default dynamics or something. I've tried out just about every addon ship I could find, and when you see huge cargo ships shoot off like a speedboat when you open up the throttle and turn on a dime, then it's just sad...  ;D

But there are really well made ships too, with really nice dynamics. So it's not all bad.  :)

Oops, what did I say?!   ..I mean.. it's terrible, awfull, don't play it, play SS instead!!!   :P

Fred

Whoops...

I'd guess what that abbreviation means but my interpretation would require red asterisks, so I guess I am way off.  :)

i dont like the look of ports of call, looks too old for me. i like the idea of having an included design program on virtual sailor, but the graphics look best on ship sim 08 so my vote goes to ship sim 08. virtual skipper has beautiful looking graphics but im not a very big fan of sailing with sail boats

There was no RMS Gigantic. The hull was redesigned and became HMHS Britannic. Because what was originally to be Gigantic was never so registered, there was never an RMS Gigantic.
