Farewell to SS Norway
« on: February 12, 2008, 23:23:44 »

FAREWELL TO SS NORWAY

The magnificent SS France was born in the grand era of ocean going liners. She was launched on May 11,
1960. She became the longest Trans-Atlantic liner at 1,035 ft, in addition she was one of the most beautiful and graceful passenger liners ever built and the last of a long line of elegant French liners. June 1979 the sophisticated, elegant French grand dame entered a new guise when she was sold to the Oslo-based Klosters Rederi A/S, one of Norway's oldest and most respected shipping firms.

June 1979 the elegant French  lady renamed SS Norway  and she was converted to become the largest cruise ship of her time.
Two propellers and four boilers were removed, reducing Norway’s top speed from a maximum of 35 knots down to around 25 knots. Her interiors saw many changes made and she would now successfully serve as a one-class cruise ship.
During 1990 two additional decks were added atop the Norway, which added  luxury cabins and suites
Norway received additional refits in 1993 and 1996 in order to comply with the new SOLAS .Her funnels had been also repainted with a dark blue funnel with a gold logo .

A steam ship Norway became expensive to operate, however NCL was taken over by the Malaysian Genting Casino Corporation Star Cruises, who decided to keep her in operation due to her massive popularity and loyal following . In 2004 SS Norway had been officially removed from the NCL fleet . After this remained berthed in Bremerhaven till 2005 .

Star Cruises later sold her to a Bangladeshi  breaker who renamed her Blue Lady after which she headed off to be broken up but was soon stopped due to a massive outcry by her loyal followers .
The battle continues for her in the Supreme court of India….

It seems that we have to farewell  this beloved liner SS France but we ‘ll never forget her . In her age she is still beautifull ,elegant and above all still pride seating out there in the muddy waters waiting her end..

Through this forum it’s essential to explore the  art of making unique vessels of sheer beauty  even if the tip of her bow is hanging now..

Greetings to all of you

Here's a link to a page with some pictures of how SS Norway is looking now : http://www.maritimematters.com/shipnewspics.html (http://www.maritimematters.com/shipnewspics.html)

You have to scroll down to the middle of the page to get to the SS Norway pictures.
(the pictures may be hard to look at for some people!)

Its quite strange but,

I hate seeing any ship be destroyed, has anyone heard about the "Riverdance" stranded in Blackpool, well she's going to be "cut up" on the beach  :'(  :'( I feel very sad about this as it was a ship that operated in Ireland also  :'(  :'( anyway back on topic yes its a shame to see any ship come to an end. Very sad.  :'(

That's sad to hear, however the last pics that i've seen it was on his side(allmost),maybe it does not come loose even with the help of tugs.
What about the vessel that has been stranded in Sable d'Ologne(france),any news from that operation.
I think that vessel is called 'Veritas'
The latest news was also to cut it in pieces, just because the major want it's from his beach(elections remember.

Talk about dangerious work conditions (dont think they have a safty code there) ???. I think id get her broken up at a modern yard where they could do it quicker and safer. But it would be nice if they could patch her,and paint her, ect, ect and turn her into a museam ship like the local naval museam turned the Uss Wisconson (Iowa class battleship) into a museam ship.

does anyone have any updates ??? ??? ???

also the ss Norway's boiler room exploded  :o :o :o
the link to the video on youtube about it is here
http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=P6194Dce804&feature=related (http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=P6194Dce804&feature=related)

Yes, this was not mentioned by the topic starter, but it was actually the boiler explosion that killed the Norway. The cost to repair her was too high compared to her age of 43 years. Today it would be impossible to operate her anyway, her boilers burned a gallon of fuel for every 30 feet of water..

Many people did a lot in an effort to save the Norway, a rich person in Dubai offered £50 million and wanted to turn her into a museum. But the owners said she's worth more as scrap.

I just came over the latest pictures of the ship taken a couple of weeks ago, on www.midshipcentury.com second half of the page. These images really break my heart :-[
