does the Red Eagle have variable throttle ?
« on: February 11, 2008, 21:02:08 »

I am a fan of the Red Eagle, but lately there is this question on my mind:
Does the Red Eagle have a variable throttle or not..?
My understanding of the Voith-Scheider propulsion system is that the propellors allways turn at a constant speed.
But in both the sounds and the HUD in ShipSim it would seem otherwise..
So I'm a bit confused here... :)

You are right, the original VSP works with constant rpm, but the shipsim VSP not, because we can't control the pitch but the revolutions. It's a kind of compromise and they are working on a possibility to steer the VSP units around 360 degree instead 180 degree into each direction. So we come closer to reality in fact.

Cheers

Thanks Bottman, I'm glad I got it right... I guess the sounds and the HUD may be something to work on in Red Eagle.. I didn't know the steering is originally 360, that would be a great addition.. :)

Dawg,
The simple answer is the HUD is wrong. RPM should be interpreted as % thrust—500 RPM = 100% thrust. The VSP does, in fact, always turn at constant speed and in a single direction (except for some installations where it is run at reduced RPM for economy in straight steaming over long distances).
The Red Eagle VSPs can thrust in any direction—360 degrees.
A lot of confusion arises from the fact that there are many different control-stand versions. Some have a Johnson bar the can change pitch from REV 100% thru 0% to FWD 100%.
The actual operation of the VSP is explained in a lengthy topic in Small Talk.

Also, the investigation of the MAIB about an accident that happened because of the controls of Red Falcon, sister ship of Red Eagle, explains well how these controls are set, and also that the RPM have preset values, selected by push buttons.

Thanks for the explanation of how the HUD should be interpreted... :)

Capt Kieran,
Here is the VSP topic that should explain how the VSP works. If you have any specific questions on the VSP, you can PM me, or post them in that topic.

The Norwegian car ferry "Julsund", http://www.fjordfaehren.de/no_f2/julsund2004.htm , har the same propulsion as "Red Eagle", however, it is controlled by two joysticks for each of the VSP units. On the side of the manovering desk, there is two thottle levers, one for each VSP. When manovering, you just point the joystick the way you want the end of the vessel that the joystick belongs to. The joysticks control both propeller pitch and rudder pitch.
