Microsoft Ship Sim?
« on: January 29, 2008, 11:11:49 »

I see in another thread a member was saying something about Microsoft making their own shipsim for next year. As that wasnt the topic of the thread it was not discussed. Can anyone tell me if this is true?

That was just Clap trap (snap trap) jerking our chain after refusing to register his serial number for the idiotic reason that we might steal it.
Apparently his elevator doesn’t go all the way to the top.
The simulator business is a tough one, even for Microsoft. Trainz is hanging on by a hair with a staff of only three at last count.

Yes, except for Flight Sim, most of the Simulators are niche market stuff and the income isn't great. There is far more money churning out "action" games, which are all based on variations of the same simulation engine and therefore all look similar. Real low-budget production-line programming. Thank the Great Gouda that isn't the case with VStep.

I know I keep banging on about TrainSim, but although Kuju (the original developers) and Microsoft (the publishers) abandoned it many years ago, it has a huge and very active following. It has become a community supported simulator.

Even at the level where a Czech Team are continuing to patch the original Kuju bugs and develop the program.

Others (me included) produce new rolling stock, new environments, new scenery and new "missions". Most recently, I got it running without problems on Vista, even though it remains Windows 95 compatible.

But, there is in Train Simulator for commercial organisations e.g. the "Add-on pack" suppliers. They supply new environments, new trains and new "missions" for a fee. Quite good money there. Perhaps a marketing lesson for Vstep - charge for the improvements!  ;)
We need that level of following here!

Is the Ship Simulator font the same as the one for Microsoft Flight Simulator?

Which means that anyone can use the font... :D
I remember when this game first game out and the font was the first "big subject" that was polled up. And because of the font it was a lot of speculations around Microsoft and this game... ;D

The truth is that there is no Microsoft Ship Simulator born into this world. The ships/boats in FSX are just eye candy to give some more life at the coast of the scenarios. The rest of the stuff is those who make ship models and modify them so they can be sailed in FSX with aircraft controls and panels. The same cud happen to this game too, but it has no open structure and the add-ons that is made is going to be evaluated by the game developer himself.

I went into my word processor, and typed that in, and it says I don;t have it on the ssystem, but would I like to use it anyway. So I click yes, but it isn't like the font on the cover. Anywhere I can get it? I've always liked that font ;D

Lucy,
The type face name is Haettenschweiler. If you really feel it is your true calling to educate us, try to be accurate. You are not being helpful otherwise.

I made a screenshot of, and copied the ship sim logo and scanned it into a font finding website and it came out as "Compacta Italic" with a very high % match. I'm not 100% sure of course but it's pretty close then.

And as mvsmith said, Haettenschweiler! But that looks different. It has more in common with Helvetica and Impact.  ;D

See pictures.

It's not a standard Windows font, You have to buy it AFAIK. Check out any font selling website. Just type it into google, you'll find it.

Shipjunky:
That font (haettenschweiler) has been in most Windows installations since 1999. Look for it in your Fonts folder. The file name is HATTEN.TTF.
If you don’t have it, PM me and I’ll send it to you.

Fred,
You are correct in that they differ in compactness and obliqueness. Hat may have been altered in a font manipulator, or for the small amount of text, in Photoshop.

Yeah it's from the same basic "family". Or do you mean that hatten was customized to make the logo? Cause I think it's just Compacta. (or something closer to compacta than hatten)

But I may be wrong

Oh Fred: Never, ever, admit that there is even the remotest possibility! Folks will lose all confidence in you, and what’s worse; begin to have doubts about the infallibility of others—such as myself.
