Red Jet Handling
« on: January 23, 2008, 22:20:35 »

The Red jet seems to handle somewhat realistically to a jet powered catamaran. But when diretional thrust is used to in reverse by the STbd engine to drive the stern to Stbd it does not work.????? And also has anyone managed to walk/slip sideways the red jet into a dock like the real jet powered catamarans do????

Hello Capt.Jams,
There is indeed  :( a small bug in the controls and their display, so that the handling is made difficult.
It has been acknowledged by the developers, it will probably be corrected together with the Union Flag.
Port jet is to the right in the information bar, and indicated as Nr 2. Nr 1 (to the left) is the starboard jet.
The same is true for the numbers of the "rudders" in the ship controls settings, options, in the game.
This question has been already answered in this thread.
When the controls are set so as to reflect these settings,  8) it will work well (painful  :'( , because when you go over to a different ship, you will have to modify once more 6 keys, and on my system, restart the game to get the zeroing). And the setting will be around -15° for the port jet, +15° for the stbd one.
Good luck with the settings,  ;)
Luc

One other thing about the red jet's handling is that a ship propelled with jet-buckets would, when going ahead in for example a stb turn, and then reversing the thrust, the ship will continiue it's turn to stb, not lika an outboard engine wich then will make the ship turn to port. This makes manouvering very easy and fun(once you get used to it!  ;D) My experience is with smaller boats with jet-buckets but I think the principle will be the same for all boats in SS08 propelled by jet buckets...  :)

Best regards Øystein!

This is not possible as the ship does not have bow thrusters.

I will try to explain it as best I can without drawing a diagram.

First thing you have to understand is the waterjet nozzles both rotate. 30 degrees right and 30 degrees left.

No bow thruster, or thrusters.

Now picture the port nozzle facing this direction / ---- \ and this is your starboard nozzle. Jets opening outward.

In SS 2008 that would be port nozzle 30 degrees, starboard nozzle -30 degrees.

This is called walking a vessel sideways.

Drop the bucket (thrust redirect for reverse) on the port engine and back down with a little more power then your starboard.

This is for two reasons- The bucket redirect is not as efficient as the jet pushing forward and the thrust has much further to travel past obstructions under the hull.

Again, picturing those nozzles in the / ---- \ configuration. Port nozzle is pulling back, starboard nozzle is pushing forward...what happens?

The vessel moves this way <----------------------------

Reverse throttles to go the other direction. This is A LOT EASIER than a vessel walking with twin screws, with or without a thruster.

Nozzles in the closed or V position look like this \ ---- /

For slow speed maneuvering, a speed brake is applied to block the full thrust from the jet nozzles. By alternating which bucket you open and close you can turn the vessel quickly. Port thrust pushes the bow to starboard, starboard thrust pushes the bow to port. Since the waterjet vessel has no rudder(s), bare steerageway does not apply.

Hope this explains things a little better. ;D

Perhaps does it also depend on the length/beam width ratio and if the thrust of the jets can be vectored to and from the pivot point of the ship. Surely, thrusters would be welcome indeed.
Regards,
Luc

This is not possible as the ship does not have bow thrusters.

You dont need bow thrusters go sideways, to slide to stbd you should in theory be able to turn your port jet hard to port and a little ahead thrust then counter the turn with astern trhust on your stbd jet. you would need alot and it will be slow but it should work on the game but doesnt for some reason.
