The Perfect Storm Poll (Poll On Waves)
« on: June 06, 2007, 10:29:14 »

Hey all. I just made this poll to see what other people think. I would reccomend that we do have freak waves
as it would spice up the game and give it a sizzle  :P

Cheers,

Matt

Hiya :)

Nice Poll ;)

I chose 'Don't Know' as I am not really that fussy about waves and such.....just as long as the game plays well and is as realistic as possible ;D

Regards.

Waves make the game more realistic xP. So you better had to choose yes ;).

I think yes, there should be waves.

I don't like the idea of having my game ruined by a wave which could only ever really occur in the event of a huge volcano.

I saw a 'freak-ish' wave at the bottom of the Bay of Biscay. It was caused (I'm told) by a current coming across an Atlantic trench which finishes at the S. end of Biscay.

It was at a distance and seen from a well known ferry. It was fascinating. Wouldn't have wanted to see it close though as it was 90+ft high!

I have no problem with rogue waves . . . I think that would up the challenge of the game. However, the one in the perfect storm was . . . well, a little too Hollywood for my taste.

But it is not the point of the simulator.

Better to have freaking waves in a game than in the real world... At least you don't get washed away ;D

Then just as good as having realistic rogue waves that do the same thing. And the computer could insert one at random, that way you are unprepared for it.

Then there would need to be a way of telling the computer roughly when to insert one, otherwise you could go decades in the game without seeing one.

That would primarily depend on the weather in whichever area you were sailing in, in my opinion.  Random occurences would be an interesting feature and may even add a significant difference to the game, thereby making it more 'interesting' (maybe not the right word) ;)

Stuart

I would think an algorhythm could be used to randomly insert one into the game.

It is the right word. And I agree with you fully. This brings the game closer to being as realistic and awesome a simulation as possible. It makes things more realistic. What is the point of being in a scenario when you know the rogue wave is coming? You shouldn't know, many people in real life do not know until it is in visual range. OR, if it is large enough they can detect it coming at them. Of course in that case it is terribly severe and would likely come at you too quickly to escape it. And again, they are random, so should they not be so in the game as well?

I'm wondering something.........

I don't sail myself and never have (hangs head in shame).  I'm certain there must be internationally recognised areas that display freak weather patterns.

Maybe if these areas are close to some of the harbours we will see in future versions of Ship Sim, they could be incorporated with 'special rescue missions', maybe battling the conditions to save the crew from a stricken ship.

Just a suggestion ;)

True, their is/are known hotspots across the globe for wave activity, however, there are so many elements in play to generate such incidents, they are still not terribly common.

Nor is it terribly known as to when occurances might be . . . I should add. The right mix of elements will suddenly spring into place then everyone waits and waits. Sometimes rogues come, sometimes they do not.
