Heavy Seas?
« on: November 23, 2007, 05:45:14 »

I'll admit i was a bit disappointed when i found that wave height only went up to 4 meters.  Its barely enough to rock some of the bigger ships.  What i'd really like to see are some 50+ ft seas where even the largest ships would have a hard time.  Would the current game mechanics support it?

It's one of my intresting topics that i have posted earlier. It may be usefull if you want to know more about the waves in detail. This is pretty much what i would wish SS08 will extend everything about it's waves to,still its a big project to do and also VSTEP has hudreads of projecs working by the  looks of posts on the forum.

I think the general concensus from the developers is that any of the unofficial tweaks to make bigger waves will affect the performance of the vessels.

Remember that they have to programme in all the handling characteristics of each ship and how it will perform under a variety of conditions.

My GUESS is that the programme can be made to generate bigger waves that look right (rather than the short wavelength by unofficial mods) but that the ships have not been programmed to respond correctly and this might lead to other technical issues. *** This is a guess only and not an official statement ***

Good guess, Stu.
The 4m seas in SS can, in fact, cause heavy working on Vermaas when combined with sufficient wind on the right quarter.

Yes, 4m (or 13ft as it really is...)  ;) is a fairly high wave. I think people forget that when they look down from a ship, they LOOK small, but if the average person is 6ft/2m tall approx... then think that the wave is twice their own height-  :o Enough said.

This makes an idea for a new location in the game.. the Bass Strait where waves have not-unusually reached 120ft.. imagine that... hehehaha

It would be nice to see some larger waves possible. Here in Oregon we regularly have 25-30ft seas during the winter months.

Yeah. We had 40' swells up here in Washington last week. During the floods.

That makes it fun going out of Depoe Bay, and real exciting going home!
It gives the Hole in the Wall Gang some good practice.
Welcome to the forum, nyersa. Where do you live?

I’ve heard that some crazy folk actually race sailboats there. Must be Kiwis. :)

Actually, the Sydney-Hobart is nothing to laugh about; some years fewer than 40% of the boats make it, the lucky ones having simply retired.
As Cook learned, that huge fetch across the Indian Ocean, and the one across the Pacific, can whip up some monster seas. I think that one of the tallest waves ever actually measured was 140 feet (by radar altimetry from a rescue helicopter 10 feet above the top). This occurred, I believe, during the disastrous ’98 race when about a dozen boats were abandoned or sank and a half dozen people died.

Thanks for the welcome mvsmith. :) I am a masters student at OSU studying archaeology. Always loved boating but just haven't had the opportunity to really get into it much yet (mainly just fishing trips here and in the Delaware bay in New Jersey. This simulator is revitalizing my interest in boating however; though its not quite as realistic as I would like. I guess compared to actually being there nothing else is gonna quite cut it.

Hi nyersa,
You could combine your interest in archaeology with oceanography if you decide that nothing, absolutely nothing, is half so much worth doing as simply messing about in boats.
Submarine Archaeology is enjoying a boost in popularity, partly due to the efforts of Bob Ballard.
OSU has a boat, and there is always that place down south in La Jolla.

Hello All,
The mentions are noted. Off course would be hard to programme the game for a various and different effects of waves.
Wind interation is a force that we need in the future versions also current effects and ships cushion effects during berth on berth (Not piers)

Cheers
