We have a simular system in Belgium.
This place is called "Ronquiere",it a system that the boat goes into some baco,and slide it above.
I've done this ones,very nice experience,however your vessel needs to be tight-up,with all double lines.
The water starts to move when the baco starts to roll.

so if I understand it rightly, first the ship is lifted, then is transported, in the baco up the hill..

No,not correct.
The boat is going into the baco by himself.Compair it with steering into a lock,only the lock is infact the baco.
Doors get closed,and the baco is riding uphill.
That's how it works.

Yes,i've seen a documentary of this amazing waterwork.
It is amazing to see it work.
We also have some lift here in begium,in strepy.
This is infact an elevator,were you go in a baco,and it's lifted to the upper following canal.
Maybe here i can get some pics,which i will post later,if i can find them.

Impressive constructions. That facility must be huge and amazing to ride for a sailor.

Here are two pictures of the Anderton Boat lift in Northwich, Cheshire, England. It was built in 1875 to lift canal boats, or to give them the correct name Narrow Boats.

Sorry, here is the other picture.   As you can see, there are two lifts side by side, as one goes up the other goes down. One of the most historic engineering works on the British canal system.

It seems that britain has the miniature version of the elevator of strepy.
I like it,also those narrow boats are realy great,use to have friends in Oxford,who had lived on a boet like that.
