In the sketchup free you can`t export to an 3ds file,so you need a programm that opens the sketchup file.

Sketchup is a good program for beginners, but it does not have alot of the things that would be useful. There is a reason why NONE of the vstep workers used Sketchup to model anything in the game ;)

I use "True Space" -it's 100% compatible with the software V-STEP uses. ;)

Like J3nsen, It is a great 3D Modeling Program. I am currently using Google SketchUp 7, and with my editing skills, I edited my Titanic 2 to look like this:

And Google SketchUp is free

A. As I've stated before I personally prefer the old versions of True Space and they do coat money

B. All you get in that download is a basepack.  If you want more exporters or any other advanced tool you still need to by them from other sources.

So I should stick to SU then?

I wonder if SU is open source. If so you could probably mess with it to be able to export. Blender is good for that, here is a screenshot of Blender's importers and exporters. It is really quite impressive if you ask me. Especially for free software. Oh and keep in mind this was a 2006 Blender release. :P
