New PC
« on: April 20, 2013, 15:52:52 »

I am looking into getting my first desktop and I am wondering what you think of this PC. It is the HP Envy h8-1435.
The specs are:
Processor 3rd Gen Core i5 Intel i5-3470 / 3.2 GHz
Memory 10 GB / 16 GB (max)
Operating System Windows 8 64-bit Edition
Optical Drive DVD±RW (±R DL) / DVD-RAM - Serial ATA
Graphics Processor NVIDIA GeForce GT 620
Graphics Controller Plug-in card

Cache Type L3 cache

I will be using  it for collage work, 3D Design work (on skechup) , app development and ship sim. do you think will this PC work for what i need it for?

I think this is a very nice PC you got there.
The GPU is not too powerfull, but I think it will handle rather well.
ShipSim is always a question if it will run smooth but anything else you want to do with it will go just fine.  ;)

Arranging photographs or other images doesn't require that much power though, surely?   ;D

In the UK we're still lagging behind in the college-work-image-rearranging area, but we're world leaders in copying-and-pasting-from-google technology though!

CC, what "apps" are you doing to develop? If you're making something for an apple product you will still need the "apple developer hardware" (in other words, a iMac).

Personally I'd go custom build - They're often cheaper and can be built to your specifications!

Why not go for an SSD to run your OS on?

I bet there are stores that can build any computer for you with the hardware that you request and give a warranty on it.

CC, if you buy a custom built machine you will get a warranty with it - normally 2 years (although some places give you more, some less).

This is your graphics card (GT 620) on the graphics card comparison chart :
http://www.videocardbenchmark.net/video_lookup.php?gpu=GeForce+GT+620&id=1429

And this is the graphics card from the SSE minimum requirements :
http://www.videocardbenchmark.net/video_lookup.php?gpu=GeForce+8800+GT&id=1279

3D work (especially texturing and rendering) will become difficult if your models start to become complex.
So, long story short, your "new" graphics card is below the minimum requirements for SSE, and you'll struggle to use it for any major 3D work.
