Hi!
I recently got the game too, and I am on Window 8, but I have had no trouble. And I am on a laptop, so the game is a little laggy, but not very badly. It crashes occasionally, but not much. I don't really know what else to say but it does work on Windows 8...
Sorry, I'm not a computer expert..    ;p

Hello Zeeshop,

Can you create a dxdiag file for us?
See here a tutorial on how to make one:

Aslas likewise.

GeForce-310M

Your video card may not be capable of running direct x 11.
Your processor is good.

Crash can also be caused by not running as administrator.
(meaning run the game as administrator, not being administrator of the machine.)

Have no win8 can not advice how to find dxdiag.exe.

For windows 8, press the windows logo on your keyboard and "R"
it also brings up the command window.

I think the 310M is probably not good enough to run the game..
It is a low-mid range video card.
The minimum required card is a 8800GT, benchmarked G3D 764), the 310M ranks 224.
