Damage and weather effects.
« on: May 23, 2007, 21:49:52 »

I was wondering about SS08 and since there is damage, I want to know if weather can effect the look of your ship for instance: a giant wave hits your container ship and some cargo falls off or if you make a sharp turn, it all goes to one side etc, etc, etc.

Not for 2008, I'm afraid. That's a heck of a lot extra work.

Probably scrapes and dents.

It would be perfect if they made it in the way that if you hit something with a small force. And that youre ship has not much damage but youre making water, that you can try to make it to drydocks ore something for repair. But that the ship keeps making water and that it can sink before you made it. And that if you hit something with more force that the ship will sink faster.

I would love to get dry docking abilities and such. Piloting the ship into the dry dock and raising her out of the water. WOW that would be fun.

If we got to where we took on some water, would we be able to stop a leak? That is a good feture on Battlestations Midway - if you take on too much, the ship sinks. However, as she takes on water she lists and her draught increases. It is really a challenge.

I would really love it when a ship could sink.. I really want the experience to be on a sinking ship... I really hope they will add it   :D

It's cool that when you take damage you realy sink! In 2006 you could go on a rampage trought the harbor without getting hurt. With 2008 you can put that totally out of your mind!

The sinking adds to the realism, by showing damage, etc. KM

In mission 5 I capsized the freighter... twice and then turned it the right way up after being hit again by a tiny boat.

It then ran slow speed with a heavy list before sinking again.

10 out 10 for appearance. Shame that the small boat went away ok but sunk the big freighter so easily.

I know it adds to the realism but it's not a great idea sinking it deliberarely. That's my opinion though.

I can understand your concern. However, to each will play it to their own accord. I do like the realism, added in the sinking, however. And to be honest, I will do some deliberate sinking for seeing how realistic it is.

A few years back I saw P&O Aquitane (now with LD lines) smack the berth at Calais. Her CPP (controllable pitch prop) actuator failed and was skewing the ship (the bridge didn't realise what was happening until too late as the bridge repeated display wasn't working)

The ship was damaged, but only brilliant helmsmanship by the Captain avoided a much more serious accident.

I wonder if sS08 would be sophisticated enough to have a go at trying to bring a 32000 ton ship to the berth with one engine stuck in reverse. Would make a great mission. And to anyone who fails... well, you get to see your sinking.

sounds like a good mission idea. and when ur making ur own missions u can make a ship be at full speed once the mission starts up(or any other speed, or even reverse)
