ShipDriver hardware
« on: January 29, 2013, 21:43:09 »

I attempted to buy one of the ShipDriver pieces of hardware but unfortunately with shipping from the US it was almost 300 USD.
The company was very helpful with regards my "almost" order and one piece of news they passed on is they only have 27 units left in stock and there will be no more made after they have gone. They said their UK suppliers had none in stock and had dropped it from their lists.

Oh well, back to the keyboard, unless anyone knows of a cheaper outlet?

Hi, yes that is the one I was looking at.

I mentioned in my post they only had 27 left, well, that is now down to 26 as I decided to push the boat out and buy one after all.  :o  They were very helpful indeed and even phoned me from the States to confirm my order details etc., and also to offer sending it by UPS instead of Fed Express to save quite a bit on the shipping fees.

It costs a lot but as you say it must add to the realism and I have found as I'm getting on a bit in years, my fingers are not so nimble on the keyboard as they used to be so I'm hoping it will help me enjoy the sim more.

Should be here in 10/14 days and I'm now like a kid waiting for Christmas!  ;D

Thanks for your reply.

Sad to see their become obsolete.
Sadly I can't afford one so I'm stuffed by getting one.

Hi Captain Cadet,
Sad indeed to see ShipSim sliding and I'm not really sure why though I do have my own theories.
I bought SS2008 when it first came out but did not bother with it a lot as I was much more involved with the Silent Hunter series and especially SH3. There is a fantastic thriving community there which when I recently checked has also made great strides with SH5 which was condemned from all sides when it first came out. Apparently with many mods from the community it is now a worthwhile sim.

The big drawback for me is that a while ago I suffered a stroke and my short term memory is completely shot. When I eventually got back to using the computer again I found that SH3 was simply beyond my capabilities. The controls are more complicated than ShipSim and I just could not use the submarine sim.

So, I got SS2008 back out and reinstalled it and have slowly been making my way getting back to using it again. Again, it is remembering different keys which is the problem and that's why I've splurged out on the ShipDriver, hoping it will be more intuitional and make life easier.

My theory as to the relative difference in popularity in such sims is simply down to human nature. I think a lot of people get easily bored these days especially if they are just cruising the Seven Seas from A to B to C etc., whereas in Silent Hunter there is the hunter/hunted element. I must admit that there were some thrilling times when a destroyer's sonar hit you, and then even greater thrills as your whole world shook from depth charges!

Well, for me the war is over! I am now in the Merchant Marine and quite happy.

True you have a point. I don't play shipsim lot anymore but I take an intress into it. I wish there was more to do.
But I support shipsim but I don't support less features
Anyway glad you're better! :)
