Harbor Tug: Push or only tow?

For berthing operations, can harbor tug push at the "tug" label on side of a containership? Seems that they're designed for towing only?  Thanks

Well, to be honest, there is no other way to use the small tug in that case. It's too weak to tow the VERMAAS, so pushing seems to be the only useful way to assist berthing.

True, the tug practically sinks towing.  But I don't see much push power.  Must you line up at the TUG sign on side of containership?

No! With this little power it's quite useless to follow the tug signs.

These 3 tugs work together to handle big ships in the ports of Bremen. I see them every time i'm in Bremen. The captains are very skilled, and it's allways nice to see them work.
I don't know, how much HP they have, but i do know, they have Voith-Schneider Propellors, and they are pretty strong.

Yes, the latter has VSP propulsors with a total amount of 2720 HP, enough for 12 knots and a bollard pull of 31 t, what's not so much nowadays. And yes, we should have a powerful, azimuth driven tug, but I don't know exactly which and when..

Are you talking about the Grohn and sisters, when you say, 2720 HP totall??
Because that ain't much! But they work miracles with those ships! I love them, and that's why i've taken these as an example.

Nope, the data is just guilty for the Bugsier tug "Stier". The latest tugs from that company, build at Shipyard K. Damen Europe (NL), are twice that powerful! But I agree, it is amazing how skilful their masters are with them. In Hamburg they show a so-called tug ballet every year at the harbours birthday in early May.

But i thought, the Stier, Grohn and Blumentahl are sister-ships? They do look-a-like!
Oh well, doesn't matter. 
Oh, and i see a tug-ballet every time i'm in Bremen! Only they have a kinda big dance-partner with them.

Well, the tugs are towing bigger vessels as well in Hamburg! But in front of almost 500.000 anniversary guests a few of them are dancing to a waltz simultaniously! The whole area in front of the floating ferry terminal of St. Pauli is closed for the other traffic...

hm nice, here in Nijmegen (Netherlands) [Gelderland] its just ships floating  past, and when i am at my brother in Rotterdam (Netherlands), i see lots of ships, and its cool that i was in port of Rotterdam, floating with a vessel, not for real, but it gives a feeling :p.
And i really love the harbours from Rotterdam, its so intresting, thats something else than in my home playing SS08

I’d certainly like to see a powerful VWT like the Nanuq, but she might be overkill for harbors. She and her sister were designed for tanker escort in fairly open waters and terminals like Valdez.
