Cunard has said it may change the registration of its ships so it can perform weddings at sea.

Wedding services must be performed in a publicly accessibly place under English law, ruling out ceremonies at sea.

But Cunard president Peter Shanks said the firm could instead register its ships in an overseas British territory making weddings on board legal.

While the firm's fleet of Queen Mary 2, Queen Elizabeth and Queen Victoria was likely to remain based in Southampton.

Big business

A number of other cruise firms have already moved registration of their ships to countries like Bermuda, which allows them to continue to carry the British red insignia.

Mr Shanks told the Financial Times that weddings performed by captains at sea were "very big business" but it was "denied to us" under current English law.

He said Cunard could designate a "wedding ship" and change its registry alone or re-register all of its ships.

But he stressed no decision had been made.

Well, the only difference is the registration. Queen Mary 2 will still do her usual crossings (Southampton to New York).

cunard is a British company.

German/French/Italian built ships, crewed by Filipinos, managed by an American company and financed by the Swiss.

Yes, truly British,

Yes, truly British,

But dude, this company has been there since 1840 !!!
At that time it was a 100% British. Every Cruise has to take Filipinos, otherwise they will go bankrupt!

It's truely a shame that they replace the Brithish flag and 'SOouthampton! on the stern!!!  >:(
And just for some stupid marriages!!!
Luckely I saw the Qeen Elisabeth and Quuen Mary 2 still with the old flag  :)

Can the Queen Mary 2 keep the title of RMS (Royal Mail Ship)??
It's not British aymore!!  :o

Nothing to do with marriages. That's rubbish and an excuse.

It is everything to do with flagging to a cheaper state.

cunard is no longer British and hasn't been for many years now.

From a COuntry that was once a leading maritime nation, we are the only major seafaring nation to no longer jave ANY of our own ships.

Britain was once a leading player in the world of ocean transport, and officers from britain where considered the best in the world. Now we have no UK cruise lines, half of the navy is on some turkish beach, and to really rub it in BAE isn't even UK owned anymore! For god sakes lets have a govt that will actually work to restore the nations pride, insted of selling it.

Hmmm  :(

Does anyone knows when te ships are changing the flag and port name at the stern?
I saw on wikipedia that the new register-place starts from october.

Damn, next year I wanted to go see the QV in Zeebrugge with English flag.
I can forget that  :-\

Breaking with 171 years of tradition I can't understand.
The English love everything that has to do with tradition.
Why change this British icon??  ???

Read this on Wikipedia:

Quote
At the end of October 2011 Queen Elizabeth and her sisters for the first time will change their registery to Hamilton, Bermuda in order to host weddings onboard. Also the word "Southampton" across the stern will be replaced by Hamilton.

Tradition?

Means nothing these days.

Hounour?

Means nothing these days.

I have nothing against Bermuda- a good and honourable island. But any Country that sells off its family silver to all and sundry is doomed to fail.

There again, since we're all jolly litttle Europeans together, what has national pride or identity got to do with it any more?

Those here who are French, Belgian, German, Dutch.... you too must do as we have done and abandon your proud heritage, your traditions, your honour and self respect (in some ways you already have by abandoning your own currency and thus Sovereignty)- once you have completed that then you can truly become the satellite state of the socialist democratic republic of europe.
