Pro's & Con's of Extremes vs SS08
« on: August 29, 2011, 22:46:56 »

Give your thoughts of the games..

With my basic computer here are my impressions so far:
Extremes:
Pro  -good graphics
-able to use any ship in MP
Con -long loading time
-merging in strange places in MP
-no info about other players in MP
      -no 2nd 'birds-eye' view camera
      -non sticky helm view

SS08
Pro    -short loading time
-slightly less graphics, but still good
-info of other players in MP, e.g. nationality, type of ship, current speed, etc
        -2nd 'birds-eye' view camera
Con   -limited choice of ships in MP, dependent on server

What are your impressions..?

well i think sse is better because:

A). i dont have ss08.

B). sse has been out for about a year; its just the beginning. theres still more stuff to fix, so i wouldint pit it against  ss08 quite yet. ;)

Not to sound cliched, but what a long, strange, trip it's been.

I prefer SS08.

SS08:
-pros:
  -stable
  -quick to load
  -NONE OF THIS STEAM BALONEY!
  -Good quality MP
-cons
  -getting a little old now
  -no-one plays it

SSE:
-pros
  -new
  -shiny graphics
  -more vessel choice

-cons
  -expensive
  -buggy
  -laggy MP
  -unstable MP
  -STEAM
-Vstep broke what was fixed (in some cases)

Oh,  finally the right topic to unload  the accumulated hatred and complaints about SSE no one will care about here anyway!  :2thumbs:
Ok, here it goes:

SS08:

+ : Possible to know whether the game loads & on how many %'s, 2nd game (after SS06) by Vstep that runs fine on my pc, nostalgia about good MP times 2008 - 2009, Agile Solution as the only fine representation of an average freighter.

- : Lame graphics comparing to most overrated games of 2007 (even Silent Hunter 4 or Virtual Skipper 5 were better), lack of possibilities in gameplay, hideously coloured Fairmount Sherpa, the bigger is the ship - the lower is details level, game gets boring after 15 minutes if I don't have any imagination.

SSE:

+ : Nice quality of water & sky

- : IMpossible to know whether the game loads & on how many %'s, STILL NO SHADOWS, lame harbour cranes from SS06, shameful VirtualSailor-ish quality of certain ships (like the Ocean Prince), same ships from previous game (only repainted), NO D_C FERRIES NO MATTER HOW LOGICAL IS THE NEED OF THEM, NO NEW HOVERCRAFT, still hideously-green Fairmount Sherpa, bugs & other insects - more than in SS06 & SS08 put together, no average-sized freighters, the bigger is the ship - the lower is details level, and the last but most important: THE GAME JUST DOESN"T RUN ON MY PC THAT CAN RUN ANY OTHER MODERN GAMES THAT ARE MUCH BIGGER AND COOLER THAN CAPRICIOUS SHIPSIM.

Phew!  I feel much better after hard working day now.  :sleepy:

SS08:

Pros:
*Works fine
*Quays were never bouncy
*Freedom 90 Dynamics/ability to hover/Skirt inflates
*Camera Mode
*Realistic wakes

Cons
*No Dover environment
*MP limited vessel choice

SSE
Pros:
*Dover
*Ferry Pack
*Freedom 90 in MP/More MP Variety
*CCC

Cons:
*Bouncy Quays for a YEAR
*No Camera
*MP Ghosts/name changes
*Freedom 90 Dynamics three changes and still not there
*Freedom 90 lack of hovering/skirt doesn't inflate
*Lack of ferries suited to the highly specific Dover environment
*Lack of realistic wakes

Personally... I don;t like the new water - it looks like blue jelly when calm...

SS08

+ fluid game play
+ acceptable loading times
+ running reliable/no crashes
+ no automatic mooring/unmooring
+ when you are lucky you can use a tug or another vessel when stranded
+ great vessels
+ great environments
+ tons and tons of great missions (thanks to the creators!!!)
+ hovercraft fells like a hovercraft
+ lots of traffic in the harbours (though: see cons below)

- ocean waves (visibly repeating pattern - don't look like waves at all)
- big vessels swaying like small boats at moderate wave heights
- some sound issues (but GREAT horn sounds - especially after the horn sound pack. Engine sounds are okay)
- no wind sounds in storm
- manoeuvring too easy - vessels react too quickly upon engine and rudder commands
- DARK HARBOURS!!!!! (I don't play missions, which take place in a harbour at night)
- not possible to manoeuvring through buoys - just one is visible in daylight, no light in the dark
- each vessel is always newly painted
- stupid and ruthless AI-traffic (where a small plastic sailing boat easily could sink a huge cruise ship)

SSE:

+ great response of vessels upon engine and rudder commands/settings (I REALLY like it - for bigger vessels it gives you the feeling of controlling something very huge). Great dynamics after patch 1.4
+ atmospheric sky/clouds/light/weather
+ sufficient buoys visible to plan the next manoeuvring steps (a very important step forwards)
+ lights in the harbours at night (again a very important step forwards)
+ great (and some nicely improved) vessels (unfortunately not Freedom 90)
+ great (and some nicely improved) environments
+ Dover-Calais

- veeery looong loading time
- frequent crashes!!!!!!!!!!!
- one never knows if the game will run or not before these veeery looong loading times are
- very bad performance - on a pc, that easily meats the system requirements and handles other recourse-hungry or PhysX dependent software well
- our free walking guy starts at a very unfavourable place when pressing the 'reset view' key. Because he is a slow guy, it can be quite annoying to get him back to his place
- big vessels are still rolling in the waves like small boats
- 'Delete mission'-button still at a place, where it is very easy to delete missions by accident
- nearly no activity in the harbours

+/- the water: Although it's better than in SS08, it reminds me of a TV program from my childhood - only Germans are able to understand that: Augburger Puppenkiste. It was a puppet theatre. When the puppets had to sail across the dangerous sea to reach the island of Lummerland, the water surface was done by plastic film, which was kept moving by some air fans underneath it (see http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yLGhk9iL22g&feature=related). On the other hand the water looks good with the graphics set to maximum - unfortunately only children of rich parents are able to play it then.
