American hurricane- effect on shipping
« on: August 26, 2011, 11:23:44 »

Sorry to see our American chums having a bit of a hard time. Best wishes and good luck (or is it "like prey to god" you say?) for the weekend- it looks like being a hell of a ride.

Seems like a fair few ships going to end up in trouble too. I see the US Navy is dispatching its E coast fleet to sea to avoid the weather- and hopefully assist shipping that gets into strife.

I think we in Britain though would have a different method to stop our Navy getting damaged in freak weather. We'd just scrap ours or sell them well below price to 3rd world Countries.

Though anyone remember the MS Hengist aground at Folkestone in 1987? That was a hell of a sight to see.

OMG im freaking out if I have power when it hits i will keep you posted.

OMG= oh my god???? Ah, well, "he" can't help you on account he doesn't exist.

As for freaking out- that's not the best way to spend your time. Just relax and follow sensible safety precautions. Provided you follow common sense and keep yourself in a tough building you will be fine. These are pretty spectacular to watch close up. I've been caught in several over the years- the first being here in Britain, then in the Bahamas (Bimini of all places- not the best for withstanding hurricanes). Then one in northern Scotland.

Just be sensible, don't "freak out" as you Americans so delicately put it and you'll be fine.

Don't exaggerate! Localised flooding and nothing serious. It didn't even make the news.

Here in Britain, we're supposed to understate weather and take it on the chin. We leave pannicking about weather to the rest of the world!

Ah right. Sorry. When you said scotland is suffering massive flooding I thought you meant that scotland is suffering massive flooding.

I mistakenly thought this on the basis that it is actually what you wrote.

Never mind. Mistakes happen.

Eh? You mean the one that starter early in June and has given us several periods of 30+degrees?

Fair play to the American boss, nobraina. At least he came off his holiday early. Our "leader" here in Britain would just have said "we're all in it together" then promptly clear off to Tuscany where it's warm and dry.

I do wonder though why so many Americans say "I was, like, praying to gawwwd" when if your god was bothered in the first place it wouldn't have sent the wind to begin with. I'd say it's something to do with convection currents rather than some non existent imaginery friend.

No offence to anyone who still believes this myth of course.

"god" is just an imaginary friend.

in the words of Roger Smith:"i love your religion (christianity)! virgin birth, turning water into wine... its like harry potter but causes genocide and bad folk music." ;D

Religion is the greatest ponzi style scheme ever invented.

I'm afraid that the concept of something bad happening then "just like, you know, preying to gawwwd" and suddenly this big chap upstairs suddenly changes his mind and doesn't let you die horrifically after all.

"Why does gawwwd allow pain and suffering?"

"Because god moves in mysterious ways / god gave us the freedom to enjoy and suffer equally" (usual smart armpit response)

"So then if that's the case isn't praying for divine intervention a little hypocritical"?
