Very Slow And Jerky Gameplay!
« on: July 28, 2011, 13:36:17 »

I recently installed SS2008 on my Windows 7 Ultimate computer. However, when I play the game it is very slow and jerky . The menu actions are very slow to respond, each mission takes about five minutes to load, and during gameplay all the movements are very slow and jerky, and sometimes there are no waves, just a solid block of colour. Please, does anyone know why this is happening? And if so, is there a way to fix it?

Could you please provide us with a DxDiag report?

For windows 7:
Start Menu > search 'dxdiag' > dxdiag > save all information > attach to your post.

P.S. Have you updated to the latest version of the game? V1.2.4

Could you also register your license key into your profile, if you click on the profile link at the top, scroll down halfway down the page and you should see the license key registration.

My SS2008 version is 1.4.2. Could my monitor maybe be the problem?

I would think your graphic card is the problem..This game doesn't play well on laptops..

Pretty much, rule of thumb is SS and laptops don't mix well together unless you own the Alienware m17x Laptop custom made with the latest goodies

The graphic chipset is well below the required minimum..Perhaps you should think of a reasonably priced graphic card.. :)

Inserting a new graphic card is quite easy to do..You will need to browse around to find a good quality/price model..  Perhaps someone else here can give some good tips.. :)

Hello Wright,

As SD has told you ...... you need an independent graphic card installed into your computer. Right now, whatever graphics you are getting is directly from the video chipset on the motherboard. This does not work with SS 2008. If you see the System Requirements of SS 2008 it clearly says that you need a video card - NVIDIA GeForce 5900 or ATI Radeon X900 or better.

This card will fit into a particular slot in the motherboard and in turn the video cable of the monitor will get connected to it. That's a bit about the card.

Sorry .... but the bad news is that your computer as a whole is not suitable for running SS 2008. SS 2008 requires a Pentium processor but you have a Celeron processor. Basically this is below the Pentiums.

Further, Windows 7 is not ideally suited to run SS 2008. It would also be advisable to increase the RAM to 4 GB. Right now your computer has 1.5 GB.

Popping in a graphics card right away is not advisable as these cards are very dependent on a good power supply unit (PSU) and with the wattage the card requires. An unsuitable PSU will damage the graphics card beyond repair.

Branded computers like HP, Dell, etc are not really suited for gaming especially those like SS 2008 and SS Extremes as they are heavy on graphics.

Please talk to a HP techie and see as to the extent the PC can be upgraded.

Vin_Sun  hit that spot on, I major in computer engineering and your best bet would be to have a computer built depending on how old the current one you have is.

My old system ran it perfectly:
Intel Core 2 duo @ 2.8GHz
4GB DDR2 RAM
ATI Radeon 4670 1GB DDR3
and Windows XP

My new system is:
Intel Core i7 @ 2.8GHz
12GB of DDR3 1600MHz RAM
ATI 5750 HD Graphics with GDDR5 memory

You don't need to go all out as I did on the second but as the others said you will need to upgrade your machine, however dells and HP's as well as most brand name computers aren't too up-gradable as they want you to come back to them for 'the upgrade' and steal your money, therefore they only give you enough power for what's in that system as built.

Matt

i would say that both ss are  hogs they require a serious graphics card I'm running a gtx 460(which is pretty good for how old it is )  and i can pull medium settings in just the atlantic ocean map if i try the Antarctic i pull about 5 fps max(extremes) ss08 runs ok but i still dont get frame rates that i expect.  which is disappointing since i think my computer is an alright gaming rig.

You say you get 5 FPS at medium settings in SS08 and you still 'think' it's a good gaming rig?

Hahah no I get 5fps in extremes on any detailed map You know actually it might be a little more but it's not 30 and I won't play a game that runs less than that

5 fps ? That is very low. This used to happen before update 1.3.5 . There were hardly any complaints about low frame rates after the release of update 1.3.5 . Your graphics card too is well above the recommended one for SSE. I have a graphics card which is a few ranks lower that what has been recommended and I see frame rates of 21 ~ 23 and it drops to about 17 when in port waters.
