Best way to make a hole in a curved surface in SU?
« on: July 24, 2011, 15:39:22 »

Hi

I wonder if anyone knows the best way to make a hole into a curved face in SU? when I try the face goes all wierd (See attached picture)

Gets annoying because making windows on the front makes the nice smooth curve go all wierd and lumpy-like

many Thanks

TFM

Hang on TFM, I'll have a simple tutorial done in a few minutes.  ;)

That is what I was doing

Good tutorial though :)

trouble is it removes the smoothness of the curve :/

It does?

Hm, it never does with me. There is a smoothing tool when you right click on it, right? Maybe you could try that out.

there is no lines to click to smooth though :/

Ah, it's called soften edges. You should see that option when you select the whole surface, rigth-click it and then down you should see that option (soften edges or something like that).
Then you should see a pop-up with a slider.

yeah - but doesn't do anything I am afraid... :/

It also makes flat surfaces appear odd - I have smoothed the edges here, but there appears to be colour triangles leading to the windows, despite being on a flat surface... :/

That's just weird.

Well, the last thing I think would work is to remove those windows and make them again.  :-\
But if certain things go wrong, use the undo option.

Also important, make a back-up copy of your model.

Well if I remove the windows it goes back fine :/

And with that flat surface, if I draw a line which removes the smoothed bit, it is fine, the messy bit goes away - but the edge is clearly visible, no longer smoothed

Have you tried turning on hidden geometry and then making a window using the hidden edges?

Go to View > Hidden Geometry. On the arc you want to put the curves on you will see dotted lines which are edges that are hidden. By using the line tool you can make a square/ rectangle on that face to use as a window instead of using the intersect tool.

as far as i know, the only problem causing the weird face shading is that the edge of the window comes too close to the edge of a segment from the curved part.

so there are 3 options to fix this:
1. reposition the window (not very likely to use because you'll need to change the design then)
2. add more rotation segments to the curved part untill the smoothness is ok.
3. reposition the segment edge that's conflicting the lighting issue.

attached you'll see an image of a detailed cilinder with a cut out hole with lighting issues, and a less detailed cilinder with no lighting issues at all. Why? take a look at how close the hole's border is to the segment's edge:
