Any news on Freedom 90
« on: May 02, 2011, 15:48:58 »

Hi Guys

just wondering if there is any news about getting the Freedom 90 fixed as a hovercraft yet for SSE?

Many Thanks,

I think the Freedom 90 has improved lately..
If you have any constructive comments, why not put them in 'Feature Requests' or 'Bug reports'..?  :)

She has?

Hmm - I will go test her out then, I could have sworn she seemed the same last time I checked...

The only problem I now have is that her bow thrusters are very hard to finely control..
(27 degrees on the indicator is in reality 90 degrees..)

yeah the 90' bow thruster is at 23' on the control

My Freedom 90 still turns back though after you turn the rudder off... :/

Have attached a video showing what she does

She also still cannot go on land... - she has grounded at Ryde

Just a quick question, why when you try to turn her she first really turn she does this side motion thing

If you mean turning with the after fan rudders, yes she will skid. Remember that you are driving a hockey puck. The best way for controlled steering is with the bow ducts.

Here is how the hovercraft operates in SS08. The way to steer it is with the ducts on the bow.

The worst thing for me - as I don't know how it actually feels to steer a real hovercraft and how they act in real life - is that she gets stuck/stranded, when you manoeuvre her up the the concrete landing platform at Portsmouth (or do I do something wrong?).
But for me she feels all right when she's on the water.

[EDIT]
I just tried to look at the difference between handling the Freedom 90 in SS08 and SSE:
For me in SS08 it's more arcade style. It is too easy to handle her, even at high speeds.
In SSE it feels more like what I imagine is the real thing. As the waves grow higher, it becomes impossible to sail her.

But as mentioned above, I haven't tried to steer a hovercraft in real life - haven't even been on it as a passenger.

That's true, when i was on her on sunday it was quite choppy in area's. I had a nice window seat viewing her port thruster and that was being used alot to correct the course due to the waves

I agree, but the steering by the bow thruster unit gives a wide turning circle at higher speeds.

but I am pretty sure a ice hockey puck shouldn't veer back on itself when the rudder is put back to 0? It should continue turning with a need to put the rudder the other way to counteract?

The bow thrusters are the 90' pipes at the front. (which need a slight touch up as 23' on a indicator is 90' thrust movement, and bow thrusters don't smoke...)

I agree, the hovercraft is a very different way of traveling across the water, it should be one of the most unique vessels in SSE

technically is there a reason this can't be done? After all if you use the bow thruster controls for one thruster and the "stern thruster" for the other...  !:)

But does anyone else have the same rudder turning experience as I do?

Yes - you're talking about, that it turns back to almost the same direction as before, when the rudder is set to 0, so it is required to "press" her further than to the desired direction? Yes, I've experienced this as well, but don't find it unnatural. But it makes steering quite difficult ...

yeah but I think it shouldn't actually spin back, if anything it should probably continue so you have to swing the rudder around to get it back

I also find she develops a turn whilst speeding up...

You mean she should continue to glide sideways like in SS08 ?
I'm not sure how realistic that was.. :)

Can't see the video. It says  "This video contains content from SME. It is not available in your country.
Sorry about that."

We won't find out when there's nobody present who actually KNOWS how it feels to steer it. But I think that VStep has made some investigation regarding this.
I also believe that it was too easy in SS08 - but it felt good sliding across the water surface!

yeah this is the problem - a hovercraft is such a different type of vessel, and I don't think no one here has experience with these vessels - we need to find a HoverTravel Captain to test it out...  !:)
