Longest anchor cable in the world!
« on: September 15, 2007, 22:49:17 »

I anchored the Sherpa in mid-Atlantic, the chart depth was 4500m.

Would love to see the chain locker that that cable was stowed in!

Ah, but you DROPPED the anchor... nothing to say it hit the sea bed... ;)

Greetings,
It sounds like not realy realistic,i know the seabottom has been created, but if your anchor has reach the bottom on 4500m,than there is something wrong. However very funny!!
Than i wish i could see the anchorchain storage on that vessel, and when that anchor has been heaved in,i think that vessel would be sailing the waters, with his bow deep in the water.Because of the weight of that chain.
Regards
Marc

Must try that later. Drop the anchor and see if it really does hold you or if its just drifting in the water.

It definitely appeared to be holding.

Talking of anchors......

I remember a rasio conversation between the foc's'le and the bridge on a passenger ship which I worked on, the second mate hadn't checked the chart to see how deep the water was (not very) the conversation went something like

"Bridge, forward, 3 on deck, anchor's aweigh"

"Forward, Bridge, are you sure?"

"Umm, I think it might be caught on something"

"Yes it's called the bottom you ****ing idiot!"

Is the anchor gripping the bottom actually simulated, or does it just automatically lock the vessels position whatever the depth?

My impression is that the program just records the spot on the surface when you click the anchor button and generates the line (and holding power) from that spot. At least that's what it looks like from the "experiments" I've done.

There is definitely room for this function to evolve and be improved; like allowing for heaving in and stacking out but even so it is possible to accomplish some maneuvers using the anchors in SS08.

Here's a pic of my experiments in a med moor. I couldn't slack out the starboard anchor as you would need to to get over the let go point for the port anchor but the "line" stretches, sort of like pulling out the catenary... only the anchor never drags.   :D  Anyway it's far from perfect but enough to have fun with.  :)

Yeah that was my thinking too.

Yeah, medi mooring the Pride of Rotterdam (or any other ro-ro that turns up) would be a nice evolution.
