New HDD

Ok,

So I've needed a new hard drive for a looong time now. Not because my current IDE drives are in bad nick, as they work as new. However, my system is becoming unstable and is due a system reboot. This means clearing off everything and reinstalling all my games, programs, backing up all my GIGS of websites, files, music and all.

Now, rather than just doing a pure reboot, I thought well because I want to upgrade my system I might as well get a SATA drive ready for my upgrade.

My problem is, I'm unsure as to which drive to get. I have spotted the drive below on ebuyer and is my favourite drive so far. Any thoughts on which drive to get??

Just wondered what some of the computer guys thought on here. I'm pretty sure about getting this drive, but if there are better ones then I'd like to know  ;)

Hi Spencer,

I'd suggest you set up a RAID array (either mirror for security or strip for performance). But this means you will be going the "expensive" way since you'll need at least 2 HDD's or more. As for the HDD you said in that link, it's quite fast and I'd say go for it.

Yes I thought about the RAID route for extra security but unsure as to how about setting it up and what the risks are. Plus like you said, I would need 2 drives or more.

That particular drive though, has a great rating and has masses of storage and has a 16mb cache so it's pretty damn fast. Shame it's only a 7200RPM drive though.

Thanks for your comments though Doc, even closer to purchasing now  ;D

Just my tuppence worth... I personally never re-format my hard drive, as the benefit of doing so is so short lived. I just do regular maintenance and it seems to work ok for me.

Does anyone find any decent benefits that last??? Maybe I'll try it.

It's ALWAYS worth doing a fresh installation of XP in my opinion as the software can get clogged up no mater how careful you are. I notice a performance boost in doing so although everyone is free to do as they wish  ;)

I agree 100% with that, I regularly re-format my HDD's (all 3 of 'em lol).  I also use 'certain' registry cleaners, this can help to improve performance ;)

Defragmenting the HDD's and registry also helps ;)

Me too. Which registry programs do you use? I don't touch the registry as a rule as it can seriously affect your computer if you make a mistake  ::)

Oh believe me, don't I know what can happen if you make a mistake ::)

5 years of using my own PC has taught me the error of my ways and I am now comfortable altering/removing file associations and many other things manually via the registry ;)

Anyway for cleaning, I use RegCleaner (practically foolproof), plus TuneUp Utilities (great performance enhancer).  I also do a regular clean of registry junk manually, but I wouldn't post any suggestions here.....just in case ;)

Foolproof? If it's a computer I can still screw it up.

Capt S. I wasn't criticising your action. Just querying whether it really makes any difference. Oh how I remember the Amiga and how easy it was to look after... provided you had a good hammer and soldering iron.

When I used the msconfig to disable a few unwanted startup programmes, my laptop races along. I am going to get a new one when I can find the right spec with an AMD processor  (PLEASE don't start a debate again about how much better amd is than the awful intel calculator chips)

No problem. I didn't think you were criticising my actions at all  ;)

I also see that you like AMD. Thankfully someone who likes AMD!! I swear by AMD but I'm not going down that route! I also stop some programs from loading up on startup. Besides, your computer will boot quicker that way  ;D

My startup has practically nothing enabled, except the basic stuff (firewall etc.).  I have seen other's PC's where they have about 50 items in their 'notification area' (previously called system tray).

That's scary and how they got anything to run is beyond me ::)

I'm the sort of person who likes to know how things work and if anything is running on my PC, I want to know why ;)

If there is a new folder on my any of my HDD's, I know about it, but I am very particular about what's running/installed ;D

Same here. In my 'Notification Area' I have AVG, Hamachi, Internet Connection Icon, Sound icon, Sound Driver Icon, Mouse Driver, Graphics Driver and Logmein (Remote Control Software) so as you can see nothing that takes too long to load.

I used to have a live chat program run everytime I booted my pc but it slowed things down so I disabled it.

Anyway, don't you think we're going a little off-topic here guys  ::)  ;D

I bought a pc mag that had a disc on the front called 'pc (something) turbo' and it claimed to speed up your computer.

I don't know whether it worked or not and I can't see how. I do know that the name turbo is thoroughly overused. I doubt that a high pressure air turbine will speed up any PC

lol I love how software claims to do 'this and that' but none of it actually works. You're better off search the net on forums and things getting peoples opinions and such.

Some systems can speed things up, but there is always a trade off. some formatting methods give faster read/write uder certain circumstances but slower on others.

But those who claim to make EVERYTHING better are barking. If it sounds too good to be true.... it is.

I do use shortcuts, but my games and most of my utilities I prefer to have at a little click of an arrow, saves having a mass of stuff all over your desktop and a start menu that looks like a restaurant menu :P

My start menu has 5 items in it (Games and Utilities are separate folders), the rest is all sorted into proper areas ;D
