Not Impressed with SSE..
« on: January 02, 2011, 02:24:19 »

Hello all,

Long time no see. I just wanted to say a few things. Im not really impressed with SSE whatsoever. Its great quality and everything, but it's not much better than ss08.. In fact i'd much rather play SS08 over Extremes..

I'm sorry to say that you have way too much time on your hands if you can get through one of those campaigns. I find they are way too long and there should be some single missions like in 2008. This is the main reason i dont play SSE very often, it takes too long. I agree that some people really like the campaigns, but it shouldnt be the only mission feature in the entire game.

I like how there's a very large variety of vessels.. however you dont use them unless you spend like 3 days straight playing a freaking campaign.. just saying.. Please dont take this as a rant, more me just voicing my opinion and throwing some things that VSTEP may want to improve on if they want to keep the not-so-obsessed people interested.

For myself, I personally like that the campaign missions are long and take a while to complete. I let myself get "immersed" with this sim. Sometimes I will take the Walkthrough and explore my ship while I leave the ship sailing on automatic over a long stretch of water. Occasionally I will use my binoculars to look at other boats & ships or enjoy the view of the scenery onshore. I can also appreciate the Orbit view and zooming in and around to see the nice detail of the ship I'm sailing and watch it cutting through the waves. But the large majority of the time I use the Helmsman view and with my WinAmp player tuned into a marine radio channel so I can hear some live ship and harbour-master chatter going on in the background (the built in radio chatter is nice, but is too short and just loops over and over after a few minutes so I now prefer to listen to some live marine radio: http://www.shoutcast.com/Internet-Radio/marine ), and with a bit of imagination I can feel like I'm "really there".

For single missions (not the campaign ones), so far I see there are 3 missions I have. One was the tutorial that came with the sim, and the other two were extra missions I was able to download once I created an account here and registered game's key. And from reading some of the various posts on these forums, I gather that there will be more forthcoming missions, and with a "missions editor" that will soon be available (if I understand correctly), users will be then able to create and share missions too.

Then there is the online multiplayer, though sometimes it doesn't seem too active, I usually find at least one of the public VStep servers having a few other players. I've had fun exploring some of the maps with some other players online and am even forming some friendships with some of the regulars I see there. Though occasionally there will be some trouble-maker - but that's the internet for ya, I'd say the large majority of the people I encounter in online sessions seem mature in attitude, friendly and helpful. "Towing" in multiplayer seems that it can be quite buggy, sometimes it can work, other times the ships attached to each other create some crazy "vortex" in which both ships start spinning around like crazy, in and out of the water, usually resulting in one or both ships being sunk :P , and a few other annoyances and bugs I've encountered - mainly with online play.

And then there is Freeroam too, where you can just jump in any ship of your choice and have fun exploring the various maps for as brief or as long as you want. Which I'm glad that the maps are quite large and varied. I also like that I can create different weather and environment conditions.

Despite some of the glitches, bugs and annoyances that can appear sometimes,  overall I am much enjoying SSE, I find it's a nice way to relax and a nice change of pace from the typical shooter and racer type of games.

I recently got SSE at the Steam-store during the holiday sales, and so far I've already gotten in about 60+ hours worth of play time with it. I'm still making my way through some of the campaign missions (currently I think I've completed about 6 of the campaign missions) and gradually improving my sailing skills with the various ships. I feel like I definitely got my money's worth from this wonderful sim, and will continue to enjoy it for a long time.

Hopefully the soon forthcoming patch I read about will fix some of the issues with SSE as well as giving us new features and improved gameplay.

Not every game or sim is going to be everyone's "cup of tea", and I can understand that not everyone would have the patience for or would want to spend hours just to complete a single mission. I wasn't sure if I would even like SSE, but decided to give it a chance and I'm glad I have.

Hi Don,

I wouldn't be surprised if Vstep chose you for their "Customer of the Year" award (if they have one) !!!  ;D ;D ;D

It is encouraging to note that as the owner of the Steam version of SSE you are indeed having "smooth sailing" compared to others who have had many issues even with their high end computers.

Your acceptance of the sim is very encouraging and I am also "in the same boat" with my DVD version direct from shipsim.com  . I sincerely hope Update 1.3 will take care of the glitches most are facing.

Go ahead .... enjoy and happy simming / sailing.

Hi Vin_Sun.

Thanks for the welcoming message.

Actually, by today's standards, my computer is outdated and a bit of a dinosaur (I'm simply too broke currently to afford to upgrade to a newer computer). I'm also a bit of a "computer geek" in some ways so with adjusting various settings and such, most games will still run well enough on this old system of mine for me to enjoy.

Though I still do enjoy a good "shooter" and "racing" type of games, I'm open-minded to try a variety of different gaming genres, and these last few years as I mature a bit more (I'm not a teen, but I'm not an yet an old fart yet - somewhere in the middle I'll say), I find my tastes in some games have matured as well and I find myself interested in well made simulation type of games.

A little over a year ago, I decided to try RailWorks. It's a great Train-Simulator, and I still much enjoy it. I've became active with the train-simming community and even taught myself how to make routes and scenarios for it. I have a little website for that at: http://www.rryard.com/ in case anyone's interested or also has RailWorks, I even have a route there available that I made for as a free addon that anyone who wants it is welcome to get it.

I guess you can say in a way that with my interest and enjoyment I've had in playing RailWorks this last year or so, it has helped to make me more receptive to try a program like Ship Simulator Extremes.

I'll most likely be an active member of the Ship Simulator community here. I'm also trying to be helpful to other users over on the SSE area on the Steam forums and perhaps interest some people enough to also pick up and try SSE.

I see a lot of potential for SSE and the community to grow and improve in time. So I'm glad to be onboard for the journey as well.

Best wishes and smooth sailing.  :captain:

Her you have a tips for tugging in MP, let the ship that shall be towed add line to the tug, then all will be better, the line will be placed were the ship those to have it

Thanks for the tip. I'll keep that in mind for the next time a towing situation comes up in multiplayer. Still hopefully with upcoming fixes that towing may be improved in multiplayer mode to help avoid the crazy "towing vortex" thing from happening.

I can do towing without any problems in single-player missions, though it can be tricky towing some of those big ships. I managed to successfully do one of the campaign missions that gets you to use two tug-boats to bring the Orient Star cruise line ship into port to dock. It was fun and challenging mission.

Hi All.

Just like to say I agree with LoneWolf(Don.)

Like most new Sim's most have a bug or two that have to be sorted.
I give full marks for SSE I think it's going to be allot better than former's.
However we must give the producers a chance and hope they read this forum for the hint's and tip's we may all have to pass on. After all we pay there wages!

I observed that you have joined the Forum very recently after purchasing SSE. Would I be correct in assuming that you have not tried Ship Simulator 2008 as yet ? If not I would strongly recommend that you buy something called Ship Simulator CE (Collectors Edition). This is a combination of the stand alone Ship Simulator 2008 and the add on pack New Horizons. The CE is available as a 1.6 GB download from the shipsim.com website for $38. I can assure you that you will enjoy it thoroughly even though the graphics are not as high as what SSE has got. Owning the CE will also give you access to download a whole lot of FREE add on vessels and also over 200 FREE missions. If you need further guidance, I will be most pleased to assist you. Then again, you are free to ignore whatever I have said if you already own a copy of SS2008 & NH.

You have also said -

"I'll most likely be an active member of the Ship Simulator community here. I'm also trying to be helpful to other users over on the SSE area on the Steam forums and perhaps interest some people enough to also pick up and try SSE."

Be assured your help will be well recognised and appreciated by the Moderators

Saltback: Hey, I think we may have been together in an online session recently and exchanged some pleasantries? :)   Thanks for your kind support of SSE. I'm still really new to the whole ship-simming scene here, but from reading through these forums I get a sense that it's mainly a nice bunch of people here in the community and that the developers care and are working to improve things. Hope to see you online again soon.

Vin_Sun: Yes, I'm still a "newbie" to Ship Simulator, and SSE is the first Ship Sim program I've picked up. I guess the next closest thing to a "Ship Sim" I owned before was Silent Hunter 4, which was interesting enough in it's own way. But it's like the player had to be a bit of a mathematician to figure out some of the gameplay like calculating topedo trajectories, plotting courses and such (btw, I'm terrible at math, heheh). And I found myself probably about 80% or more of the time being submerged, mainly just staring at the charts and not actually feeling like I was "playing" the game. The novelty of that wore of soon enough, and with SH5 insane DRM scheme I think I'll stay clear of the Silent Hunter series for now.

So, I'm glad that SSE is a lot different than Silent Hunter, which has a lot more to interact with, and even though things can be tricky to figure out at first (most sims do have a bit of a learning curve though), and it can be quite challenging (but challenging in a good way) I found SSE easy enough to get the hang of, there's a lot of boats and ships to sail, neat places to explore, and overall a lot to see and do. Overall I'm having a lot of fun with it.  ;D

I'm still learning and exploring SSE and my Captaining skills are gradually improving.
But thanks for the suggestion about SS2008 & NH package. I'll look it over. I may not be able to get it right away due to a current lack of funds and my situation, but I'll most likely  get it when I'm able to afford it.

And for me, though great graphics in a program are nice and a bonus, it's not really what makes a game or sim good for me (such as my experience with Silent Hunter 4 I mentioned, which has good graphics from what I seen of it, but I didn't really enjoy the gameplay, and it wasn't really much fun for me personally. But like I mentioned previously, not every game or sim is going to be everyone's cup-of-tea).. rather good gameplay, replayability and having fun with it is what matters more to me.

Cheers!  8)

 Ahoy there shipmates.

Yes LoneWolf(Don) We had spent an hour or two on line I was hoping for a tow while aboard a large Tanker at Rotterdam. But due to a towing issue all went bad as you may recall?
However I hope Patch  3 has sorted that problem?
I hope to catch you all on line again very soon!

Thank's for advice Vin Sun I have the pack's you talk about but like to give the new one's a burst too!

I do have to say that SSE is really only fun (I have noticed) if you are playing for hours on end... non stop...
