Ok, quick update. Windows 7 seemed to have re-recognized that it has DX 11 now and that operating under Windows 7 Professional. Things are back to normal, for now. I have no Idea what just happened then, if you look at the DX DIAG you can notice about several missing components.Suddenly I was looking all over the net for a solution, I closed dxdiag for the 5th time and afterward everything looked ok.

That did feel like some of the weight has been taken off. Funny thing though, i checked my main screeen and this is what it shows. DX version is 10, I do have a strong feeling it iI have dx 11 because i have been trying to download dx 11 and it keeps rejecting it. I had this paranoia after playing GTA IV on PC for the first time and seeing that the detail is not where it should be at the highest point. Found out that ATI cards are on the evil list for this game and only NIVIDIA ones will operate smooth.After looking at a few youtube videos checked the system requirements i kept banging my head against the table what could it be the problem

Just to re-assure you, "Windows 6.1" can refer to Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2. You don't have Windows Server 2008 R2, so you have Windows 7. The "NT" is because 2000, XP, Vista and Windows 7 are all based on NT (£New Technology") coding.

Regarding the version of DirectX you have installed, you will have DirectX 9.0c installed by ShipSimulator (or some other game). Also, you will have DirextX 11 and quite possibly DirectX 10. They can live side by side perfectly happily. Despite the similar names, they are very different "programs" (actually sets of libraries used by all sorts of programs).

However DXdiag is a bit quirky with its reports. It selects one of the DirectX installations to report on but doesn't tell you about the others. So treat its reports with caution regarding what version of DirectX you have installed. The registry holds the answers.

For information, the NT numbers are

NT (first public release) = NT v3.1
NT 4 = NT v4
Windows 2000 =  NT v5
XP = NT v5.1
Windows Server 2003 = NT v5.2
Windows Server 2008 = NT v5.2
XP (various 64 bit versions)= NT v5.2
Vista = NT v6
Windows 7 = NT v6.1

This is alll so much new information for me about Windows, I do remember some games "self-upgrade" the graphics card such as GTA IV, for this one I had no control to stop it.Ship Simulator huh, that game is even sneakier because I did not notice anything what so ever ;D. Some of my high end games do lag a bit, maybe it's because of all these ones who took control and "tweaked" things which they shouldnt, I don't know why developers do that  :thumbdown:. speaking in general  ::). Tonight, I had another peek into this, this time I launched DxDiag from it's rightfull place, not from the search feature and it looked like it was back to normal, but still tricks me with the reading i get from going into my computer.SO if you get into dx diag from start menu it shows you all the faulty info but if you go into it from where it acualy is, it displays more accruate info, crazy  :o

Don't worry if a game installs another version of DirectX. The different DirectX versions don't affect each other.

If you had DirectX 11 installed, and a game installs DirectX 9, you don't get downgraded. You simply have another set of libraries installed. The programs that need DirectX 9 will use those libraries and the games that need DirectX 11 will use those ones. Same with DirectX 10.

Nothing gets upgraded or downgraded when you install another version of DirectX. They are all very separate.

It's like having Chrome installed as well as FireFox and Internet Explorer. None of them affects the others.

***

The developers have to use a particular version of Direct X, depending on how they programmed the game. I program video games in DirectX 9 quite a lot, simply because I have lots of code produced already and it takes a long time to convert it all. And all versions of Windows since Win 2K can run it. (Wind 2K and XP can't run DirectX 11, so I don't write games using that version of DirectX).

***

By the way, if you look at your uploaded screenshots, you'll see that in them you are running different versions of DXDIAG. That's why they are giving you different results. Blame Microsoft, though, not the developers of the games.  :doh:

Hehehehe, saying that my baby is ok, not the best but better than my last one since SSE runs exceptioannly well. Something is really wrong how they made GTA IV I can tell you that now on the other hand, if I figure out how to get pass that I could actually have eye candy detail, and trust me they have not made it easy, had to re-instll the game 2 times, use a crack to make sure it loads up, then gotta add a mod that acualy alloes you you expand above 1000 so I can actually run it smooth  :doh: :doh:. I had no idea this could acualy be solved, I gotta I misssed the forums, they changed quite alot since 2 years ago and it always is a pleasure asking for advice here  :thumbs: . Ill see if anyone's home at Microsoft so I can have a slight chat with them about this, about a hotfix or patch, im sure there will be one eventually
