Well, way back when, when I was in the Navy, my skipper tried that with a Destroyer...didn't work out so well....dinged the bow, tore up the pier and nearly knocked an overhead crane in the drink....this would have been much preferable!  

Shortly after that, his job description included the phrase "Do you want fries with that?"

Well, the tugs came out and offered to help us into the berth, but he waved them off and told them that he didn't need tugs for such a simple operation....well...that didn't work
