TV Show
« on: October 29, 2010, 03:19:22 »

Don't you wish there was a TV show abut ships and the maritime industry  :(  I guess there isnt one (atleast in the U.S.A.) because of the demand. I would probably be the only one in my town watching it haha  But still, it would be pretty cool. Every once in a while a thing comes up like Mighty Ships, but they havn't made a new episode in a while. Same with America's Port. All great shows, but nobody watches them but... Me and You haha.

Everyday I look for a show like that. Amazing that with 500+ channels there is nothing about ships!  :-\

Very true. I would most likely pay extra for a channel like that, just imagine, SHIP CHANNEL, with different shows, including Maritime News, Ship Reviews, stuff like that   ;D All in HD  ;D  :2thumbs:
  I wish.

I wish Discovery would make a new show about ships and things like that. Way better than stupid Whale Wars . Although Deadliest Catch was preatty awesome but I think its out of season.

Your right, Deadliest Catch is one, or, the best TV show I like based on my prefrences. I think Discovery Channel should make a Ship Show too, but I think I know why they aren't. The demand for TV. Most people would think that a Ship Show would be pointless and "stupid". Captan Cadet has a good idea making a Youtube Channel for Maritime Things. Could be popular among ship lovers like us   His topic is here - http://80.95.161.114/shipsim/forum/index.php/topic,22311.msg297016.html#msg297016

Matthew Brown, to mention Chaser you must be an Aussie  ;)

For the rest of you, Mighty Ships has also been shown on free-to-air Channel 7 here and will probably show on Yahoo! 7 again sometime, I will post links when they're up again.

"Mighty Ships" fans in the U.S. and Canada must be enjoying the latest season.

Those in other parts of the globe who are looking forward to these new episodes in your region may get a glimpse of what is in store by following this link:-

http://www.discoverychannel.ca/Showpage.aspx?sid=13057

If you've missed some of the older episodes like - Emma Maersk, Tyco Resolute, Becrux, etc ....... they are all on You Tube.

Hi Freeciv,
The same had always occurred to me. "Land lubbers" are hardly interested in anything that is maritime, except maybe cruise ships because of the glamour that surrounds them. In so much the Airbus A380 is a lot more attractive to them for reasons of "size" but did it occur to them that a ULCC can carry maybe 3 or 4 A380s on its deck !!! Somehow the exposure to ships has never been there as it has been for aircraft. Speed is something that fascinates people and that is one thing that merchant ships lack. Kids are overwhelmed when they see commercial aircraft in airports but seaports do not offer that access for them to explore ships. The same applies to maybe even cars, trucks and trains

Discovery and Nat Geo have given us programmes like Mighty Ships, Mega Structures and Extreme Engineering but I look forward to the day where Discovery or Nat Geo does a program on merchant ships which will be an eye opener for the world to see how their LCD TVs travel from the factories in the east in a container and finally reaches their living rooms or maybe how they eventually get that gallon of petrol made from the crude oil carried by the VLCCs. Maybe they could also cover the lives of seafarers on different types of ships – the efforts involved to get the tanks of a chemical tanker scrupulously clean, getting the holds of a bulk carrier ready for grain after discharging coal, squeegeeing the tanks of a vegetable oil carrier during the final stages of discharge, a tank vessel inspection by the USCG, getting a VLCC ready for dry docking ….. just to name a few.

We are now in an era where the youngsters of most nations are shying away from a career at sea. With an attitude as such I wonder if a TV show about merchant ships will ever interest them. TV channels also look for revenues through advertisements in popular programmes and I suppose they feel that a marine related programme will not really get them the bucks they are looking for.

Here is the TV industry’s contribution (to the best of my knowledge) to the maritime world. Many of the progammes listed below maybe quite old and I am not aware of the year when they were beamed. I hope it will be a source of information to seafarers to know what they missed while out at sea !!!

3) World’s Largest Cruise Ship – Freedom of the Seas

8. Deep Ocean Port (off Shanghai)
9) Panama Canal
10) Widening the Panama Canal

Extreme Engineering
1) Under Construction – Container Ships
2) Off Shore Oil Platforms

Big Bigger Biggest
1) Oil Rig

Manmade
1) World's Largest Cruise Ship - Oasis of the Seas

World's Toughest Fixes
1) Cruise Ship Engine

Discovery Channel

Mighty Ships
1) Becrux – Livestock carrier
2) Akamalik – Large sized Deep Sea Fishing Vessel
3) Fairplayer – Jumbo Shipping’s Heavy Lift Ship (sister of Jumbo Javelin)
4) Faust – Largest Car Carrier
5) Paul R. Tregurtha – Graet Lakes  Bulker
6) Tyco Resolute – Cable laying Vessel
7) Emma Maersk – Largest Container Ship

Discovery Knowledge
1) Building the Queen Mary 2

Discovery Science

I find those programs on tv with a nautical theme always way to much overdramatized, perhaps due to the comments of the narrators.

A while ago i was watching L.A port (or is it America's port?), the pilot storms to the bridge and starts shouting that he has the con - Well, any pilot who does that on our vessel can stand on the bridge wing for the rest of the trip!!

I find it is the same with Mighty Ships... it's always "If this docking goes wrong, however may thousands of tons of steel will smash against the quay bla bla bla" :P
