Hey Guys,

Well as the title says I'm currently in the process of building a new system. The things I have bought already I'll put in bold. However I'm not sure if I should go with liquid cooling or not. It's going to be a higher spec system but I'd like to hear what others think
Intel Core i7-860 Processor (8M Cache, 2.80 GHz)
Asus Motherboard
At least 6 GB of RAM
Nvidea card
and Im leaning towards the Antec 902 Ult. Gaming Case with a 750 Watt supply.

My experience tells me that water cooled systems are more expensive, more prone to accidents (water leak and a fried computer!), more hassle to setup and about as effective as a proper air cooled system.

I would stay away from a water cooled system, and guess what? The water is cooled by a fan anyway! Also, the money you spend on water cooling could be spent on better parts

Processor sounds good anyway, I would personally go for an Nvidia Card, but ATI and Nvidia are about neck and neck I'd say.

Also, to keep the costs down if you want, buy 4GB RAM first, as you can always upgrade later if the mobo supports it

I agree with adam, stay away from liquid cooling, liquid and expensive computer parts dont mix too well

I'd always be worried about it leaking and ruining everything as adam said. Processor seems good, Nvidia seems good. 750w power supply should be good unless you get a really high end graphics card

Hi just like to throw my 2 cents in - where do you i.e. in a hot climate? or will the PC be in a room between 5-28 Celsius if so a fan cool system is fine, and cheaper

but if you are going with 3G+ of RAM please please go with the 64bit windows version
Only because win 32bit can only handle 3G - it may see more but it will not use it - check out tom's harware.com for more info

PS and if you are going a liquid cooler use liquid nitrogen hehe

When I first heard of liquid cooling I couldn't really process (no pun intended) how it would work. As Keane said liquid and computer parts?! I just wondered what other's thought...anyone have suggestions on a high end card? And dont worry Grindlepol 64 bit's the way to go

Just remember the four basics....

1. There's no such thing as too much memory

2. There's no such thing as too big of a Hard Drive

3. There's no such thing as a processor that's too fast

4. There's no such thing as having too much video memory/speed

To that 1) -> There can be too much memory if you're running 32bit system. When running 32bit OS with for example 16 gigabytes, all what you can use is 4GB.

Why choose liquid cooling, when there are excellent other coolers..?
You can get a good silent fan cooler, or a passive cooler..
Also there are big differences in the different makes of graphic cards..

Hi Capt. Matt .....

That you've not specified your budget, here are a whole lot of motherboards suitable for an Intel Core i7 processor. In fact I narrowed down the search from a U.S. website called newegg.com. I am not a geek or a pro when it comes to computer hardware so I will not be able to pinpoint on a particular MoBo. But I would say avoid an Intel MoBo. You can consider a Gigabyte or an Asus.

As for the gfx cards, since you are considering Nvidia, here are some high end ones possibly the best from the Nvidia stable. ATI Radeon cards too are good. The ones shown in the PDF are also the high end ones. Needless to say, opt for a card which supports DirectX 11 ..... almost all new boards do it.

Yes, that is awfully expensive .... but check out the specs and it may give you a lead to choose certain components. As far as I know, Alienware is a well known name in gaming PCs.

You've been a great help, I haven't checked out the pdf's yet, but I'm not too into ailenware, too expensive and I want something to do

that's why I'm building one haha

And motherboard wise I wanted a wireless LAN motherboard by asus as I currently have a P5Q and am very pleased with it.

I would've gone for the new hd 6870 from amd, two of them in crossfire. Or I would've wait for the new amd cards coming soon, for example one hd6950/hd6970. And then 4 gigs of RAM (1600 mHz) and a nice motherboard for 1156.

And I wouldn't go for any Antec cases, because most of them simply suck. A Fractaldesign R3 is a good choice, quiet and elegant.

you can do all the playing around you want providing you have the knowledge to keep the components from being damaged

And i dont think you could have possibly blown anything up only having a case and a power supply

well i heard a nice pop and saw a flash come out the back, so i dunno, i dont have the option to change it from 115v to 240v or what ever, so it must be automatic :/

Please don't tell me that you plugged it in while it wasn't connected to anything?

If it was a decent power supply it shouldn't have gone bang, but usually a pop and a blue flash isn't a good sign.

The unit could be faulty however, so you might be able to get a replacement
