Who knows what the real reasons were..
Pete Bethune had built the boat, had even taken a second mortgage on his house to finance it, but was considered a bit of a wild, "gung-ho", kind of guy, whose favourite phrase was "bring it on"..
He had always been the skipper of the boat, even in her Earthrace days, but Paul Watson was planning to make the co-pilot, Laurens de Groot, the skipper in the future, as he was a more level-headed fellow..
Maybe Pete did a kamikaze and stopped the boat when the Japanese whaler was approaching, suspecting the Japs would welcome the opportunity to run her over...
Rather than suffer the humiliation of handing over command of  "his"  boat, he scuttled her..

Just a theory..

    Maybe.
But, if I were the skipper I would rather she her live and under someone else's command than at the bottom of the ocean.

If you were the skipper, you would not later take on a solo-enter mission upon the ship that sank you to present her captain with a repair bill.. ;)

Especially as it was a Japanese security vessel!

But I suppose it was the only as such serious maritime accident that didn't have an appropriate follow up investigation for years.
Capt. Bethune decided off his own back that, thats what he wanted to do.
To look eye to eye with the Captain who had sunk his ship.
And said himself he didn't mind if they took him back to Japan as a prisoner, becuase he wanted to stand up for whaling.

Btw, the Cove is back in business for the anual catching of thousands of dolphins..
Dolphin meat is not really good (too much mercury etc), the Japanese don't eat it, so in their wisdom they give it free to their schoolchildren.. :)

mercury really isn't so bad for you, you just must not eat whale/dolphin meat too often, mercury leaves the body, but there is another thing in there, which I can not remember the name of, which doesn't leave the body. We studies this for a while in biology with our teacher, but I was half sleeping at the time, so I don't remember everything.

Dolphins, being at the top of the food chain (except us), also have a lot of cadmium, DDT and PCB's..

It's not that the Japanese don't eat dolphin meat, it's because in bigger cities like Tokyo no body knows about what happens in Taiji.
But you will find that the people who actually live in Taiji like the fisherman etc do eat the dolphin meat.
(Even the head of fisheries was tested positive for mercury poisoning).

And I will correct you there Salty  ;)
They used to give free dolphin meant to the schools, but two council members stood up for what they believed was right and from that day on there has been no dolphin meat given in the schools.

And @Minime...
Your right, but when the levels of mercury are over a certain level which is then classed as not safe.
Then thats when you could get Mercury poisoning.
It's not quick, it's a slow death.
It eats away at your brain and over time you can get illness and memory loss etc.

Kind Regards

Matthew

Good thing we here in the civilized world mostly eat beef..

At least there's never been anything bad that we could contract through eating beef...   ::)

I wouldn't go that far.. :)
But I hear there are great strides being made in the development of synthetic meat in laboratories..
In 200 years we will no longer need animals for meat production..
Only the very rich will be able to buy the genuine thing
So it will be goodbye to chicken farms, cattle farms, pig farms, fish farms..
All our meat will come out of laboratories...What a great future... :)

lab meat.... Hmm i think mcdonalds is ahead of us all, just read an article earlier about a burger and fries that have sat on a counter for roughly 6 months and they have not decomposed, grown mold or anything, they just became hard as a rock. I wonder where this food comes from..... :P
