Please resurrect the water taxi
« on: September 01, 2010, 15:29:53 »

The VSTP7 water taxi is a great lil boat for beginners to hop in and learn the basics of Ship Sim. Well, at least it was in SS06 and 08, but the water taxi of SSE is a broken mess.

While playing mission 4 of the Tourist Tales campaign, I noticed the following:
-the boat is slower than before (limited max rpm?)
-underway light causes some strange graphical glitch on the dashboard view.
-boat gets filled with water very easily. In fact if you don't unmoor quickly enough, you start the mission with a damaged, half-sunken boat! Strange tilting causes water to get in during normal course, too.
-"engine steering" doesn't work. With the port engine at 100% and the starboard engine at -100%, the boat should turn quickly portwise. In SSE, it moves slowly forward and turns very slowly instead. :-\

Please fix the good ol' taxi so that we know the whole of SSE will get better ! ;)

The Water Taxi is very broken.

I did some experiments with engine settings, increasing the throttle gradually and noting the RPM and speed. The first bit of travel on the throttle has no effect, RPM stays at 0. After that it behaves very strangely, here's a list of the engine RPM and the speed achieved at those revs;-
RPM    Speed in knots
59       30.5
63       31
155     34.2
243     35.8
382     36.2
548     35.9
600     35.7

So the revs make very little difference and the speed actually falls as you approach maximum engine RPM of 600!!

I did the same experiment with SS 2008 and that works correctly, with speed increasing gradually to a max at max  engine revs. Also the maximum revs is 1500 on SS 2008, why is it different if it's supposed to be the same vessel?

Just another bug, eh? I'm afraid I'm very disappointed with SSE, I've gone back to 2008, it's much better!
