Steam
« on: August 29, 2010, 18:31:42 »

Hi, my friend has bought the box version of SSE and is stuck installing it because it says he needs to update steam, but has no internet access. I am purchasing the game tomorrow, and would prefer not to encounter the same problem with steam.

Does SSE require steam to run, or just activate it, and is it possible to get a box version of SSE which does not require steam?

Thanks for any help you can give

Hi Captain Kingsbury,

Welcome to the forum! :)

Once you have activated SSE via Steam you will not need to use do so again. It's a one-time activation over the internet :)

What IS steam? Does it mention anywhere when you buy it that you need something else?

I personally am waiting to see if it's worth buying or not. But not impressed to see you have to get other software to make it work!

Some of us have enough effluent on our computers without adding to it...

Hi Stu,

Steam is a program that keeps your games up to date. It's kind of like a gamer manager, a platform to sell, download, patch and talk about games.

Not sure about your second question by the way, sorry :-\

Thanks Adam

So it DOES mean you have to put this on your computer before you can use SSE? I don't mind putting vstep stuff on my computer, as it is a trusted company, but I know nothing about steam and don't want any more  junk on there than I absolutely must.

Is there a reason then that vstep is making it compulsory to put relatively unknown extra junk on your computer? Or is it another shortcut? I was very impressed with 06, less so with 08- better graphics and environments, but somehow lacking in gameplay nonetheless... wonder how sse will pan out.

Nah, you don't need Steam at all. Personally i don't use it either, since ShipSim is the only game that i play on my glorified typewriter.

Thanks! You should come around more often, you missed my promotion party a few months ago!

So what are people wittering on about steam for then???

If I go and buy a boxed copy (to use on my recently burned out computer (currently on the office 'NON glorified typewriter)) from a shop do I or do I not need to use steam?

As people are saying yes to that...

Hello Stu,
Why don't you download from VStep site? You can anyway burn a DVD in case you are later without internet connection?
Tout va bien, I hope?

Luc

Hi Stu,

The only people who need to activate via Steam are those who have purchased the Paradox boxed version that uses the Steam system.
Other than that Steam is NOT required :)

Adam,

Are you saying there are TWO boxed versions? A steam and normal?

Luc, bonsoir!

If I can avoid steam then I'll do that. I'm on mobile broadband due to tech fault, so I will have to wait anyway,,,

Oui, je suis tres bien, merci. Et vouz?

Hi Stuart,

Yes there are two types of boxed version, but I believe this was down to the publisher, not VSTEP :)

Stu, I tried to find out, and indeed Steam is almost everywhere the final distributor, but as you are underway very often, you could instead buy a DVD in the Benelux, where Paradox is not the publisher (to be checked) ?

Yes, at the time of the installation, you are prompted to select a language. It solves the problem of expatriates...

Merci Monsieur Luc.

Next time I'm in Flanders (November) maybe the bugs will be ironed out by then...

Or maybe I'll buy pro/nautis instead as it seems they've made a pigs ear of this...
