Why should Shipsim 2006 be replaced when you could just make new add-ons and stuff like that? Why not do wut EA games dose with the Sims2? keep the program for a while and make multiple add-ons with new ships and places for not just 1 or 2 years but five to six. That way, Shipsim can also open up a costom content web page with creations by the gamers of shipsim.

Woah!  Add ons can't modify the technology in the game, only fresh new games can.  If they took your idea on board we would have to wait ages to get our waves, cranes and such!  Besides EA are just milking The Sims 2 for all it's worth, I'm glad to see Vstep aren't sinking so low.

EDIT:  Excuse the pun! :D

Just forget I even broght up the topic. I was a Sims fan for a long time and I'm just stuck a little on how they make their games but the reason I thought of this is because if people make ships for shipsim 2006 wouldn't it just beuome outdated and they would have to make it all over again or will there be a program to bring the ships from shipsim 2006 up to date with the newer shipsims. sry I even put the topic up :-[

The ships being worked on now are for Ship Sim 08 anyway, and I imagine it will be easy enough to update them for the following games as well.  Sorry if my initial reply was a little...rash.

Add-ons can be updated if that’s what we are talking about. At least I will update mine if new versions of Ship Sim require me to do so. :)

Its ok, just i'm a little too used to EA ways, but maybe shipsim could have more add-ons 4 ship sim. I guess what I mean is maybe shipsim could have more than 1 add-on

I think what matters more to most people right now, including myself, are the new features that Ship Sim 2008 will introduce.

I'm sure the new stuff will be great. I hope some of that new stuff is sinking ships, wave affects on boats (like a big tanker passing a small boat), daylight changing, season affects on the region of land, etc.

If the new version has less bugs it is ok for me to buy a full version.

I think I read ages ago that 2008 is going to have multiplayer feature but it's not stated on their new website...  ??? Did I just get something wrong?

I noticed that too, it is a little worrying.  Perhaps the multiplayer was intended for the original 2008, the one which will come after this next game is released, probably titled Ship Sim 2010.

If it were only so easy to enhance the technology through add ons I can see merrit in your suggestion. However, for this game, far too much is not yet explored for such options to be had. Good thought, though!

I don't mean update and make the add-ons be the things to make the game more realistic, I mean have more add-ons per shipsim. Not make the game better with add-ons, I mean more ships, ports, and other things people would be interested in.[

HA HA and all the developers love you, I am sure. I like add-ons. The high quality ones really make the game(s) a lot better.

As I say in my signature below "I only see so far because I stand on the shoulders of giants." It is a quote from Isaac Newton who worked out what gravity was. I could not have done this myself.

So SS should copy good ideas from FS and anywhere else rather than starting from scratch with everything. An idea is not copyright but the way you implement it is, so SS has to bear that in mind and I am sure that it does.

Of course you could write your own ship simulator to be played with paper and pen. You draw a grid and have ships like a submarine which consists of three squares joined together....but No, it is not quite the same.

I see that after a few replies you changed your mind so I am not addressing you personally. Regards BrianG.

That's not really very accurate, any program can be updated/patched for new features... Silent Hunter 4 recently gained a whole new set of strategic play, dynamic loading of objects etc in the U-Boat missions addon, POCSIM3d recently got lock gates, dynamic weather etc. I suspect the truth is that Quest3d upon which SS2008, although it makes for fast development, makes things more difficult to upgrade than "written a from the ground-up" program would.

I agree that there is a lot of mileage in the present core program.

However as in the case of Windows, fundamental weaknesses in the core program have to be fixed to make major advances. Imagine if it had been written for a PC with 16k memory and no hard disk. Creating ships and Envoronments at present is an extremely skilled task. Making it easier might well require changes to the core of SS. Can anyone else give examples of other progress that will require a change to the core?

As far as I can see VStep are dedicated to providing the best simulation and that requires rewriting from scratch at intervals. This best meets the needs of career seamen who want to use it as a learning tool. It seems that a 2 year cycle is practical at present. I am sure other developers will follow the alternative path so you will have a choice.

With a bit of luck computer conversion programs will be written to convert ships etc from one version of SS to the next. Regards BrianG

There is so many skilled guys out there that writes great software, a lot of this is free (under a GPL) for the end user as nobody own's the software-code, but most important is that everybody can help in the development. Would it be un-thinkable that we got a ShipSim based on GPL and the same content as SS08, but maybe splitt into 2 directions, one for the Arcade guys and one for the serious simmers that want as much reality as possible..
This way all the skilled and talented guys that have fun modelling vessels could produce a large number of vessels and the guys that offer servers could then decide which environments and vessels they would have on their server.
VSTEP is doing a great job, but it seems like there is limited resourses and then development takes a long time and cost a lot. Please don't misunderstand me, I do and will continue to support VSTEP and the development of SS08, but there is so much potential in the MP part that this should be developed much faster and much more detailed and realistic. I simply cannot wait for cranes to start working, mooring points to be established, barges with transferable cargo, working winches, working nav. equipment, dredgers, current, tides, proper wind effect, real weather updates, real shipping line colors, vessels with different names, VHF comm. integrated, working docks - both floating and dry - and what other way to make all this happen but to choose from a sim built by the users or one developed by Microsoft...?
Just an idea...
