Why has the Stern thruster been added?

I think the new Stern Thruster was added to improve the turning of the Pride of Rotterdam in SSE. Besides, with it in Rotterdam's P&O Terminal, you can put the Stern thruster to the Wall, and the Bow away from it. That should help with the info of the new Thruster.

It was probably added for use in Dover and Calais? Oh, and the bridge of POR is greatly improved in SSE  :2thumbs:

But as far as I can see from the screen shots there is lots of work to do for the Creator's Forum. The on screen controls look ugly, when you are used to the old improved ones (just look at the steering wheel), and if the real ship doesn't have a stern thruster, the in game ship shouldn't have one, either.

Is the view from the bridgewings better? Can you see the bow and aft down the side of the ship from the wing? I found it a pity that from the bridgewings of PoR in SS08 you couldnt see the bow or look aft down the side of the ship - as you can with Ocean Star og Vermaas.
You are forced to use an outside view to berth it precisely - not prototypical

No you cannot see the bow, but you can see down the sides (you could do that in SS08)

Sorry, but you're going to have to berth from an outside view - there are no controls on the bridge wings  :(

Why there aren't controls in bridge wings?  ???
There are in SS2008 and not in SSE?. I like to berth controlling from the bridge wing. It's not good.  :(
I hope they wiil de added in a future patch.

I think the Wing Control is a Trade off for the Stern Thruster.

Hi,

Here are my thoughts :

The stern thruster has been added to ease the manouvering of the PoR in small ports, like Calais. As mentionned above, if you prefer, you may not use it, your choice ! Might be useful in some situations, though.

I believe the wing controls have been temporaly removed for performance worry, But I think they'll come back in the future, when other things will be sorted out.

It doesn't make any sence at all.

Most D-C Ferries have a stern thruster for added manoeuvrability, since this is the only suitable ferry, they had to add it for D-C...

TFM - does it mean that it is not possible to manoeuvre the PoR in Dover and/or Calais without stern thruster? Or is it just a bit difficult?

I Remember my first departure from Rotterdam in SS08, where I thought it would bee impossible to turn the ship in the narrow basin. Now it is routine.

I assume you can still do it, but its just easier with the stern thruster

But if the argument is, that it is easier, then every single ship might have one (like it's the case in VS - which I don't like)

In my opinion it is harder to manouver the POR at the P&O terminal in Rotterdam than anywhere in Dover or Calais....

Then of course the stern thruster is completely useless.

Hope Creator's Forum can/will change it again

Yes,the trusters you need!!
If you go into the harbour and turn, you need them!!
Unless you turn your ship outside the harbour, and go astern inside. This offcource counted more for Calais than Dover.

The PoR in reality has rudders which can be set separately. That's how the captain we spoke to manoeuvres inside the port, to and from its berthing spot. With a button, he can switch the rudder wheel to port, starboard or both rudders. In SSExtremes, the GUI we designed doesn't really cater for this. To compensate, we added a stern thruster. Trust me, manoeuvring the PoR in Calais and Dover is really hard, even with the stern thruster, without hitting the jetty. If you hit it, you get damage.
Core Campaign Mission 6 has the trip Rdam - Calais - Dover. In the future, we'll update the bridge instruments system so it can accommodate the separate rudders. We'll take out the stern thruster.
