Anyone else?
« on: August 17, 2010, 18:32:41 »

Has anyone else been recieving phone calls saying they've won a certain amount of money? We've been getting it for over 2 months and we were put on the do not call list. It's the most annoying thing ever. And also, they don't give up. They call back every five seconds and it's a different person. Worst of all, if you ask for their number, they'll say the number they called. So my mom ask and when he said the number, it was our house number. They don't care about the law either. They say the worst possible things to people.

Be careful out there. If you get a call saying you won two and a half million dollars (or what ever currency you use if it's world wide) it's a fraud. And the police can't do anything about it because they disconnect their numbers and use fake names.

What is the world coming to?  :-\ :'(

I always get emails from 'HSBC' claiming my account has had a security breach and i need to sign in to verify it was me

Strange becaue im 14 and i don't have a account with HSBC

i went on the website and it was the same as the real site. when you clicked on any other links it would take you to the real website, apart from the sign in or create account links

Always check if the prefix is https instead of http and if the "padlock" is present on such websites. (see attachment)
If not, ignore them and close your browser immediatley. And NOT by clicking on the X top right but by using the Alt F4 key combination.

Ahoy Ralphy
For those people who make that Phising Sites it's quite easy to alter the clickable areas of the site.
For instance:
If there is a pop up-box asking you to accept or denie (or Yes or No) clicking on denie (or No) could be altered to read accept (or Yes).
The little x to close that pop-up box could be altered to read accept too.
By closing that pop-up box or the whole site by using the Alt F4 key combination passes bye those clicks and do only what you want to do: Close and get rid of it.
Kind Regards

That little x on the top-right corner can be linked to anything you don't want to do. Even opening a dishonest site can give you a lot of trouble, and the longer you stay on that site, the bigger the trouble could be.
Even hi-jacking your computer's files is a possibility.
Meaning that they infect your computer and the only way to clean up is to buy a quite expensief clean-up program from those people.
Or, off course, formatting your computer and loose all your files/programs etc. etc.
You can't be cautious enough those days. Alas.

Hi Scott,

We used to get calls like that every so often. Or ones such as "You've won a free holiday blah blah blah".

My dad used to pick it up and tell them something which I won't repeat here...it usually worked!!

Hey Jack,

Well I wish that worked for me. We've tried everything. But they keep calling back. We even called the police and nothing. I just wish it would end

The police haven't done anything? I would keep demanding until they get something done. They're nuisance calls...so surely they cannot be allowed? There must be something they can do to trace the calls? What about getting in touch with your provider?

@ Ralphy,
And that, my friend, is an example of a phishing Mail.
You see that address? Nothing about https, but only http , a clear example of a not secured site.
When you're dumb enough to log-in at that "site" and give them the details they are asking for, well, be sure that your bank-account will read $ 0,00 before you can say: "Where is my money gone to?"
If you are no 'client' of that 'firm' send a copy of that mail including the header etc  to any legal authority, and never, really never contact the sender by yourself.

The police can't do anything as we don't have a number or any real names to give. And we said we wanted to be put on the do not call list. Guess that was ignored.

Yup here it is http.. but most banks and other companies that deal with money transfers and such important personal details that come into play, are on a secured version..

So they have the enhanced http protocol with the 'secure' added to it.

this forum dosn't need a https because it dosn't sell anything, if you go on to Shipsim.com and order something it is under https.

i always forward the phishing emails to my mums freind because he is a online security expert or something along those lines

edit: did i know something fred didn't, sort of...im so proud  ::)

Only joking.. ;)  Usually, when I get mails I don't trust, I don't open the message and block the sender..
That way all future mails from that address go straight in the bin.. :)
