Dover-Calais scenery, nautical charts?
« on: August 15, 2010, 16:06:21 »

On what will the Calais-Dover scenery based? Nautical charts? Traffic?
Should we just follow the arrows (waypoints) when we sail from
Dover to Calais and vice versa?

What about navigation, currents and trraffic in this environmet and SSE?

I hope this has not been discussed yet.

Most of those things are found in missions and not the basic environment. Waypoints would only be in missions, and a realistic amount of AI traffic would probably not be included in free roam for performance reasons.

its easy to sail from dover to calais. once u have left the entrance at dover, leave at a 45 degree angle and turn so u can see Dover castle directly aft on ur stern or 180 for a relative bearing of ur ship, then turn so that on the chart u are crossing the channel at a right anglre and just head stright. Then when u see the radio mast on the french coast and the coast starts to turn u follow the beach keeping paralrl to it untill ur bow is past the first peir at calais and ur ship is at a 45 degree angle to the entrance, then just swing ur ship into the entrance and make ready to approach any calais berth at about 6 knots

Depends how big the Dover-Calais environment is...  ;D

Ah! Well I have my own opinon.
As you can see in the image below, I have highlighted two possibilities in the Dover - Calais Environment.

Firstly being the orange area, it is smaller with only 3 major ports; Dover, Calais & Folkestone (I believe Folkestone has to be there, making the orange area even smaller would be a very small environment indeed!)

However if it was going to be the Red area (including the orange aswell) then we would see two more major ports added; Dunkerque & Boulogne.
Obviously if VSTEP were to choose the Red area it would be a hec of a lot of work.

The orange area seems more likely, like the solent; Portsmouth Southampton & Cowes.
But we shall see, this is my opinion of the scale of it
Also as you can see Ostend is quite close, but I don't think it will be included, becuase its just on the boundary of the Nothern Sea which as you know is a completely different environment in itself.

Kind Regards

Matthew

I live about 30 miles from Yarmouth! :)

The port is currently being expanded at Great Yarmouth at the moment, lots of ships coming in and out, dock cranes being built ect..

Nah, sorry... I'm campaigning for an extension to Pompey.... Portsmouth to Bilbao (in one environment)... Pitty we don't have a real ferry operator to run the real service. Ah wait, we do. Oh no. My mistake. peeandohno management killed it.

Not that I'm bitter.

Adam, are you sure that's the same Yarmouth...

I was going to say - expansion at Yarmouth? - the yachties would never allow it...

they don't want the new ferries... let alone extensions...

I'm talking about the diddy Yarmouth, not Great Yarmouth
And I think VSTEP should know about this great rout, so I shall email them  :)

I know this is mostly for ferries but this will probably be fun in the Agile Solution too
