Transferring files from Computer to computer
« on: July 31, 2010, 19:52:47 »

Hi guys,

I'm getting my new computer in a few days - but at the moment I have a slight problem...I want to transfer all my photos and a few files, but I don't know how to do this, as all my photos add up to quite a large amount (To say the least!!).

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance! :),
Jack.

Maybe buy an external hard drive and save everything onto there? Then you can transfer anything from one computer to another. It's also useful for backing up files and photographs, in case you loose them from your main PC :P

I learnt that the hard way...

But I use an external hard drive, they can be cheap, all you need is a 40GB one or even less for just transferring files and it also comes in handy for other things.

A priceless solution is dropbox, on both old and new computers download it and connect them, extremely simple to do, on your old computer simply drag and drop the files in and they will appear on your other computer, then just copy them out of there. On the free one you only get 2GB of space though unless you pay for more

I think it would be hard to find a 40GB harddrive these days, 1.5 TB seems to be the new standard...  :P

Just tried to find a review, could't find any :-\

Ebuyer is a very good website, though sending something back or trying customer services could be problematic

I got one of these for my mother. It makes more noise than a 747 taking off, but besides that it's a decent harddrive for a decent price!

Hi Jack

do it easy and free
Take out the HD from the old PC and install it in the new one then you have the files on you new computer, if you have the operating system(Windows) on it Yost delete it and kip all you files you want to save

Hi Jack,

I use SanDisk 16 GB USB flash drives for moving stuff between computers that are not networked. I think you can now get even larger capacities.

You can also get a USB transfer cable with a software CD to connect two computers that are adjacent.

Tore’s suggestion about moving internal hard drives is actually easy in my case because I have Gateway computers with front-loading bays for SATA internal hard drives. The naked drives snap into plastic handles and simply plug into the bay. They are even hot-swapable, if you are not timid.

Another alternative is a crossover network cable.

Regards,
Marty
