The iceland volcano eruption and other things
« on: April 17, 2010, 18:40:02 »

Since the volcano started erupting and the ash start going around europe.
Its really freaky when in less then 3 days 1600 flights were cancelled by the ash :o
For the  members who live in europe here, I feel sorry for you.
I will just say there are weird things happening on earth these months especially with those earthquackes and t'sunamis.

well, look on the bright side. It's said that the ashes will lay a cover on Europe, that will block beams from the sun, bringing the heat down 2 degrees Celsius trough the next couple of months, in favor for the global warming stuff.

The planes running from Newquay to The Isle of Silly are still running, and never stopped because of the ash, though when they landed, the plane had ash on it...

But what is the likelihood of ash going down the funnel when there is a certain amount of force pushing the gasses upwards?

The ash problem as far as I know only really troubles jet aircraft , flying through the layer which formed at 20,000 feet.

Low altitude, prop aircraft shouldn't be troubled.

I don't think there are many ships capable of flying at 20,000 feet.

I'm quite amazed by it all, I've not seen a single plane in the sky and the fact the news is actually speaking about what I can see (well to be correct what I CAN'T see) is astonishing.

I saw the ash cloud on Thursday, was really cold because of the lack of sun. I'm just glad about this ash cloud to be honest, it gives the good old transport a chance again such as trains and our lovely ships. I bet Cunard are kicking themselves for only having one Ocean Liner now. I heard the residents near Heathrow are pleased too, they can enjoy summer quietly, open their windows when it's boiling and not hear loud planes.

As for the 2012 theories, it's the WRONG VOLCANO, so no end of the world yet. :)

Oh and apparently one plane has already crashed in Hampshire, it looks like it might of been caused by the ash cloud. Thankfully it was only a small private plane with two people, but still, it looks like the ash cloud is still having an effect on the engines like its been said it would.

Well the ferries are all REALLY busy now - I cam back on the Commoodore Clipper, and there were so many people that they had to sleep on the floor some  :-\

What I find ironic, is that people are moaning about flights being grounded...If a jumbo jet dropped out of the sky with so many hundred people on it, and they were all killed - imagine what people would be saying then?

The companies can't win either way, since some people are too narrow minded, that they want to get on their flight, and that's the end of the matter... ???

Better safe than sorry... it isn't as though people can't travel at all - the Ferry Companies are there, and good luck to them making their pennies out of this one!

ships too cause the ash could cause easely go in their funnel

Ships sail through sandstorms all of the time in the middle east without any serious detrimental effects (other than needing a damn good clean afterwards).  The air inlets to the engines are filtered so the ash cloud should not cause a problem and as someone above said ash will not fall down the funnel because the exhaust gas going up the funnel would push it away (even if it did fall down the funnel it would do no harm anyway).

The worst thing that i have ever seen from a sandstorm was that all of the engine room fire alarms were activated which gave everyone a bit of a scare for a few minutes.

Yes, it's the same story for the NorthLink Ferries, who sails out of Aberdeen to the Orkneys & Shetland islands. They are struggling to cope with the demand and had to put on extra sailings this weekend.
