Question: Which graphics card to purchase?
« on: March 15, 2010, 18:38:24 »

Hi guys,

Just a general question about graphics cards. I have finally got around to purchasing a graphics card (Yeah, that's right, I'll be able to run SS again!) but unsure as to which one to purchase.

I am thinking of buying a NVidia GTX 260 card. My budget is around £150 and need something to future proof me for a while. What would you users who already run SS recommend? I ran SS before on a low end card, but now I can buy something which should run almost anything (almost :))

Cheers!

but don't forget more power the card it puts more demand on the power unit

Hi Sadsid,

I realised that before I planned to buy a graphics card, which is why I bought a 800w power supply with 4 x PCI 6pin connectors :)

I've heard the 8800GTX are getting a bit outdated and that the NVidia 200 series are performing better. This of course though, is based from what I've heard and read. I may of course, be wrong!

nVidia is coming with some new cards very soon: the GTX 480 and GTX 470
The 480 will be their new top card, so will probably be quite expensive, the 470 could be interesting.. ;)

Ahh but as mentioned SD, I only have a budget of around £150, and I can bet on the new cards will be more expensive than that! :)

You're probably right, we shall see in the next few weeks..
At the moment the ATI Radeon cards seem to be quite good (5000 serie)
I've also been considering the nVidia GTX 275

I currently have a nVidia 8800 GT which works fine, (15-20 FPS in SS), so no real rush.. :)

I have a GeForce 8600GT with 512MB dedicated memory. It works perfectly in my machine. I do not know if such a card is still available, but it works perfectly when I am testing SS Pro too.

Hi guys,

Just bought this from Ebuyer: http://www.ebuyer.com/product/169059

Hopefully it will run everything I want :)

What do you think?

Traddles, what kind of frame rates do you get?

Hi CS,
I get anything between 15 and 22FPS depending on the actual mission. This produces a good non-jerky motion so I am very happy with it.  I am really no expert so my feeling is:- "If it aint broke, why fix it?" I could, therefore, not comment on the one you have shown us.
I attach my DxDiag so you can see that my set up is not wildly expensive.

Thanks Traddles, I also have 2GB RAM, but I have an old processor so we'll see what comes from the new graphics card :)

I usually get 60FPS  :)

Hi Matt,

Thanks for posting your results. It's nice to know what people get actually! Does any one have a similar card to the one I've just purchased? It would be interesting to know what FPS they get when running SS :)

SNAP!

But I have twice the RAM and a useless processor :(

Nice!

Well my system is still old, but I've purchased a new power supply, a new graphics card, already got a SATA 2 hard drive so really all I need now is a new motherboard, processor and memory.

Bit more cost effective this way you see :)

I think it's bad time to buy new card.
Just a few ATI's cards does support the new brand new DirectX 11-standard and NVidia just getting theirs first ones to the shelves.
I would wait some time to DX11's to fully enter the market and then buy either DX11 for long time use, or some DX10 for a little more cheaper price what they're atm.

Well I had my card delivered this morning only to discover that it's too big and covers up my SATA ports! :(

I'll be getting a low profile sata cable in about an hour, so hopefully that will do the trick! ;)

Will do. The card fits in the case, it just blocks the SATA ports.

Anyway, should have that cable soon enough ;D

Hi guys.

Great news! The right angle SATA cable worked! The graphics card hasn't properly 'clipped' in but its not going anywhere.

Railworks runs great, now installing SS and will report back ;D
