Virus/trojan/pc flu/ from google
« on: February 18, 2010, 20:55:15 »

Firstly, I KNOW it serves my right for using google...

But an .exe was downloaded to my computer from google (prob one of the ads on it) and it was a nasty little sod that I am glad I caught it quickly.

Careful with it. I didn't note down the name, but it was a six letter name. exe... I will see if I can interrogate norton to find more details. Odd that norton only waited until it tried to run, rather than when it tried to download.

They're never going to stop unfortunately. Many of you might be surprised how easy they are to program. Very easy, and can cause some major damage.

And how would you know that, huh? What are you some super virus writer? It's your fault is it? You tried to kill my computer! You soandso! :D

Seriously though, I am interested how this one downloaded itself without my knowledge. It was only when it went to activate that Norton spotted and stopped it (I KNOW, serves my right for using that programme!)

No news on it anywhere though... I am wondering now, actually, whether this might be a fake just to make me say... "ooohhh, isn't Norton clever? It isn't really the ineffective, resource hogging waste of time everyone seems to think."

Hi Stuart,

All the viruses I have had except for one which I accidently clicked (My mistake), downloaded automatically.

If you KNOW your computer is being infected (I usually find my machine roars a bit more, like when you insert a disk), go to task manager and end Internet Explorer, or whatever web browser you are using...Sometimes you can get it quickly enough that it will end the download. Simply X'ing the browser out doesn't work, because the download carries on (so I was told, and appears to be correct).

Jack :)
p.s. If you have the option to do so, also block all network traffic. (You can usually find that in the 'Control panel' of your Anti Virus...I know Bullgaurd and McAfee have it). Then un-block a few moments later. I find this also helps!!

Thanks jack,

On my laptop, there is a physical switch, which can quickly be used to shut of wi-fi which is quicker than shutting down or disconnecting by software.

Norton doesn't have very good controls to allow you to SIMPLY allow/disallow traffic. What was particularly worrying is right after Norton told me to stop worrying and that it had saved my computer AND lifekind, the vista OS came up with a "permission to do XYZ" box...

Hi Stuart,

Ahhh right...Even better!! I forgot about that  - If you nock that off straight away then end the browser using task manager then you should be fine.

Also, I had Norton too when I first got the internet on this computer. I thought it was absolutely rubbish. Several viruses got past it. And it couldn't remove anything! - But, I heard the new version is a bit better. I hope so, since the one I had was absolutely useless...When I first installed Bullgaurd on this computer it came up with viruses I didn't even know were on the computer!! - That combined with Malwarebytes (http://www.malwarebytes.org/), and Windows Defender, keeps my computer reasonably safe... :)

Alright..I won't lie...

I have programmed malicious software, but only for experimental purposes, only..(They get nasty) :police:

I only execute it on machines with no Wi Fi hardware and no internet connectivity. It's all culminating in an anti virus (and I want to emphasize that I'm against hacking) software I hope..

Bad news for me, my netbook got infected by a virus last night while I was on it.  It suddenly came up without warning and the next thing I couldn't use my netbook.  Now I have got to see if my big sister Jessica can get rid of this pesky virus.

Ah, I got a BSOD last night, I wonder if it's related..it was only for seconds. I had doubted that it was [a] real BSOD for quite a bit though..

I have a continious problem with IE or OE coming up (not responding) for 2/3 minutes the first time I use them...

So I tried it with Nasty Norton turned off and  :o SHOC! HORROR! IE/OE started working. I think I'd prefer to take my chances with virus/trojan than Norton  ::)

Try Spybot Search and Destroy, it's really damn good. It's free, doesn't slow down your system, and for me it finds stuff Norton doesn't. I'm not talking cookies either, I'm talking full blown infections..

My big sister Jessica fixed my netbook but she warned me to stay away from free anti-virus like Avast.
