Topic: My Career At Sea; (Read 4620 times)

Hi all,

I thought I'd post a bit of a topic, to let you guys know that I may no longer be around as much as I used to be. I have realised that my career at sea is important, and I am going to dedicate myself to it, as maths is my only weak area - Which I need to work on. This means that unfortunately, I will no longer be around, and by next year, I doubt very much whether or not I will be able to be on at all, except in the weekends, where the server is on, and I have a break.

All in all - It means that I will not have as much time as I used to on this forum, leaving me with enough to maintain and run IJTS.

With the open day at the Nautical College here at Fleetwood - I realised that I need to start dedicating myself more; I can't afford to leave school with grades that I feel I could of bettered myself on. I am also under a lot of pressure at the moment, with GCSE Exams, Having the course at the Nautical college, having extra Maths tuition, and having French after school (as a result of the school not being able to accommodate French in the school day, for whatever reason...).

I feel that I have too many commitments, which I cannot really run so much anymore - and unfortunately, my commitment to my career at sea has to be more important $:-\$

I have really enjoyed my time here at Ship Sim - However, I feel my 'time' is nearly up, and that I need to focus on my career at sea more. I genuinely will miss it, however, as I said, I will do my best to post now and then, and will most certainly post on IJTS (As normal), and will try and be online at the weekends. However, in the week - I need to try focus on revision, etc.

I hope you all understand - And I really have enjoyed my 2-3 years with Ship Sim, and the community. I will do my best to keep you all updated on the progress I make through my career; Maybe one day I'll sail with MJ! (Ballast).

Jack, it is going to be very different without you here. I will be one of many who will miss you. I understand that your life career is more important, and I can't say I don't agree with you there. You were the first person to welcome me to this forum, and I'd like to be the first to wave goodbye. You and I have had quite a few memories to look back on, but I'm glad we'll still get to be in contact. Thank you,

Why exactly do you need french? I intentionally failed Spanish because it was a waste of my time when I was in education as I thought it wasn't needed for nautical college.

Thankyou for your kind words...I can remember when you first came to this forum - What a lively character you were!

Jammy: I don't 'need' it as such...However, it is one subject which I know I need to kick into gear on. As well as knowing that it would possibly be a good bonus to have on my CV. Which I am soon going to start sending to companies to apply for cadetship...

- Yes, I did make up my mind, and it's all I really want to do with my life!

Ralphy - It's quite possible I could end up at Warsash, or Glasgow, if the company which gives me cadetship isn't at Fleetwood. I'll keep you all posted on that...Good luck with your career Ralphy.

You're following the same sort of paths that I intend to travel (i.e. Nautical College), so I expect you to do well!

Good luck getting the qualifications you need, and the job you want. And maybe, just maybe, I'll come across you at sea!

Hi Jack,
I wish you all the very best in your endeavours. If I could do it, I feel sure you can too. I know it sounds like hard graft, but when you get into spherical trigonometry it becomes very exciting, at least it did for me. As you will know, all celestial navigation is done with the use of drawing triangles on the surface of a sphere. There is so much more for you to learn nowadays but it is all very valuable stuff. In March there is an open day for "Careers at sea" here in Birkenhead. It is to take place at the John Moores University Ship Simulation labs. just a short distance from the Entrance to the Birkenhead tunnel.

From what I've heard, when you get to senior officer level you are more an international lawyer than you are a 'boat driver'...

McG, take it from me- no matter how much you enjoy what you do, you NEED time away from it. Seriously, a small amount of time away from it- in moderation- is not a sign of weakness or lack of dedication.

I'm just saying that unless you like stacking shelves in your spare time, a career working for Tescos is not going to be very fulfilling.

Still, I don't think there are many careers that include skippering and motorsport, but if there was I'd love it. Either one on its own is good enough for me. (except motorsport consists of spending money rather than earning it)

I can understand if one can't be around here due to computer or internet problems, but in your case there can be always found a one little tiny minute at any time in a day/night just to open this forum & say something like "Hey! I remember this place!" or "Hi all!"

Guys, don't be so quick to judge Jack. He's making it his own responsibility to spend more time on his schoolwork, that's for a good cause. Jack's gonna need this later in life, he'll be on later, he just needs to spend more time on other things at the time being.
