Nothing is "cool" about a ship sinking, especially with people aboard. I posted this for informative purposes. It's not often one gets a chance to view something like this. Tough crowd...

I agree.

And as Capt.Cooper said, it is a rare opportunity to view such photos...I personally find it very interesting to look at. Even though I find it almost distressing to see a ship sink, at the same time, you can see this ship had a very long career...And at least, there was no loss of life either.

I agree with Jack, and it may even help ship designers to understand what went wrong so that this type of accident/sinking would not (hopefully!) happen again in future.

Can I throw in another angle on this? (tough if anyone says no as I just have!)

Watching a controlled sinking, such as I saw of the Cornish coast back about 94 when a Royal Navy frigate was sunk as a diving reef is something different.

I don't know if I could class it as 'cool' (I don't see what the temperature has to do with it... cool=tepid... :-\) but it was interesting to watch... in a strange way.

A former warrior of the sea, badly treated and neglected. then cruelly drowned to be a reef of fun until the iron breaks down... Oh sorry- that is the serving ships I am thinking of.

EDIT: I looked it up on wikipedia and it is most likely it was a Leander class named HMS Scylla.

'94?!? That would make me 1 year old when I saw her go down... I think it was a bit later than that Stu...

Scylla was only about 5-6 years ago....

The website boatnerd.com http://www.boatnerd.com/ (http://www.boatnerd.com/) is quite popular with the great lakes boat watcher crowd. Very informative indeed.

I will be much more reserved in the future as to my postings here. I wasn't aware that the word "cool" would be scrutinized at this depth, and by site moderation as well.

Hi Capt. Cooper,

Don't worry. I'm sure TJK just misunderstood at first, that there were no victims in this case.

We have had our share of people that 'glorify' certain horrible tragedies on this forum, as you're no doubt aware aswell. And a lot of the more serious shipsimmers don't approve of such behaviour. And more than once, was the loss of life and the resulting grieving and such, disregarded by people that posted in a 'cool' way about accidents that claimed lives.

But in this case none of that applies ofcourse, and I suspect that Tore just made his remark out of a personal dislike of such topics. And I am sure you yourself would agree with it too. I also don't think you would have ever used the word 'cool' when there would have been victims involved.

As such, the bit of flak you seemed to get does not mean it's a staff intervention. But we're all human after all, and a misunderstanding easily happens.  :-\

Fred

I appreciate your replies gentlemen. I'm not fully aware of general likes & dislikes of the board members, being new here I hope would be taken under consideration. I am an administrator on a 60,000+ member snowmobile forum & can fully understand & appreciate what you do here.
