recently two of my friends have been helping me to make a model boat that we have to enter into a competition. the school has been helping us by giving us the materials and helping us make it. for some extra credit i downloaded google sketch up and had a go at deisgning a early model. it is a catamaran that has a mould already however, we still havn't arranged for a man who knows how to make fibre glass to come in and help us build the hull.
because i don't have the dimensions at the moment i can't make it accurate. it's also the first time i've ever used google sketchup so don't laugh!

i cannot add on the way we will acheive our idea of cleaning the sea of rubbish because we are still unsure what is best to use, a conveyor belt to pick up the rubbish or a boom with a mesh at the end that tips back and dumps the rubbish into the hopper

anyone have any idea's on how to make it better?

yes it will pick up rubbish from a swimming pool when we demonstrate it to the judges. well thats the plan

it needs to be finished by march somewhen and we only do make it once a week after school

also how do you curve lines i can't use the curve tool to make the bow

A good start is to make a arc from two curves on a flat surface, then drag down and pull back - makes a pretty good bow

Nice one! I had a competition once where I had to build a containership

Was great fun, especially when I won

Try to keep the prop as horizontal as possible, but make sure it comes out of the bottom, not the back.

I know how to fibreglass things, but I don't think I can help there!

I've seen that model before, I'm sure I have...It looks exactly like the model of the SS Norway on the SU Warehouse.

Yes he does.

Modifying another model IS frowned upon, like I frown upon people who dye their hair ginger, because they haven't had to grow up with all the abuse. It's the old, 'If You're Going To Do Something, Do It All or Not At All. And Do it Properly.

It's the same thing as real model boat makers frown upon people who buy kits rather than scratch building them.

It isn't against the law (I think!), but it's Just Not Cricket, What?

But let's not clutter this topic any more. I, for one, want to see the outcome of Ralphy's work. A catamaran Dredger? Interesting challenge!

rubbish collector. does anyone happen to have some mesh belting that can be used as a conveyor belt that can drain water away

Can I suggest a floating box with a sign saying "don't make a mess of the water or I'll chop your 'armbands' off." and attach a sharp blade for good effect.

No- hear me out... How inovative is that? Won't your teacher(s) be impressed at your forward thinking. It is better to prevent than cure- and you will prevent the water getting dirty- isn't that inventive? (it is also quicker and takes less work...

)

well our challange was to build a boat, not to prevent people from littering. it could be used in a swimming pool to clear leaves or in the sea for genral rubbish or cargo that has been lost in a sinking eg. the wood which was lost a couple of years ago on a cargo ship
