Is there any truth in the wikipedia article that says PO Pride of Canterbury operated from January - November 2008 with only one propellor.

I am sure technically it is possible to steer the ship, but is this legal? Or has wikipedia got a dodgy entry...?

without doing any research, i have difficulty with the safety aspect of operating with half the number of props ........... but i never cease to be surprised.

I'm reading the MAIB report now... seems like the master dropped a nut... ignored his No1s advice... I imagine the master is now a deckhand and the No1 is skipper...

I think this must be a wikipedia error...

WOW!

I am amazed this is legal.... Remember that time when a PO ship (Aquitaine?) lost a CPP hydraulic pump and effectively the skipper had to steer and stop the ship on one prop only...?

Suppose, just suppose, that the same thing happened to the Canterbury... 2 props - 1 = 1 1 prop - 1 = 0

With 0 props...

Would it be a bad idea, do you think, to mention this in the topic which is fast becoming "are PO in the quagmire"?

I have seen the European Endeavour and European Seaway class as 'Underway by Sail' on AIS before...

I've driven a vessel with only one engine...under the guidance of my father mind you there is obviously a large size difference however I'm sure it works under the same concept, you just need to turn the rudder to port say if the port engine is the only one working

If you have a ferry company that isn't performing very well (and of course I am not even slightly hinting this with PO) then anything to save fuel... Perhaps a discount for passengers who row? (a similar method is suggested for Ryanscare- passengers who flap their arms to help the plane fly get a discount)

Like I said, the technicalities of it are not in question, just the wisdom of it... As you say, there is a large size difference...

In fact, they did lay the ship up from June for that very reason. Personally I think it an affront to safety that they even tried to keep it in service and even more appaling that the MCA allowed it.

No. a motorbike is called a motorbike. They are very distinctive compared to a two wheeled car. For example, they have no roof, floors, doors, bumpers, the main thing of course is that the wheels are in the middle and nicely balanced, compared to a 2 wheeled car...

Exactly... Now, would you take that car across the Dover straits, loaded with passengers, trucks, crew et all?

I think you'd probably have more chance docking it than a PO ferry with 1 prop... And it would probably be faster.

BTW bearing in mind that the power required for X speed increases as a square, one wonders what their maximum speed is. 5-6 kts?
