My thoughts on the IMG BB Code
« on: January 10, 2010, 22:45:14 »

Hi everyone, just my thoughts:

Whenever someone uses the "IMG /IMG" BB Codes, to make an image show up, people quote it, and (especially on topics where there's lots of pictures in the first place) there's a hell of a lot more pictures than there should be, just because someone made a reply. What I thought was, whenever someone posts an image with those codes, it would be nice of them to put it in a blank quote, like this.

Quote

That way there's not a bunch of extra pictures of the same thing and need for a 56 K warning?

See how after quoting the original post, the image is no longer there, while all of the rest of the original post content is?

So you are saying...

Because the quoter is too lazy to delete a few bits of code..

The one that wants to show off his nice pics has to put them in an ugly quote box?

 ;)

As far as I know, it's pretty much know to veteran forum users that directly linked pics should not be taken over into quotes of the posts containing them.

Yeah, but imagine all the time saved. ;D

Go on Fred, I know you want to agree with me, don't be afraid to tell people the truth...

Just kidding...

heheh,...  ;)

Nah I actually honestly think that - although you have raised a valid point - it is the responsibility of the people that quote a post, to quote with the same care as they should take when they post the text that goes with it.

So.. no spam allowed, right?

And keeping images attached that are not necessary for the quote..could be, technically, considered spamming then.

There are even forums where I have been, that have banned people for continuesly quoting without removing the original images. After due warning ofcourse.

Now, it's not a major 'forum crime' as far as I am concerned.... heh..  people that don't know about it, can be adviced about it, for future reference, and might pick up this habit that way..

But once someone knows.. then it is up to the quoter to be responsible about what is in his post, and the quote IS in his post, images and all. (..or her post, obviously)

That way the images can just stay as the original poster intended them to be.. not with some ugly (my opinion anyway) quote box attached to it.

If you personally don't mind, and you choose this method, then it WILL save time, and effort. I do grant you that. So the more people would do it, the better. But me personally, I wouldn't, nor would I see it become a protocol of sorts.  ;D

Cheers!

Fred.

Howabout we gang up on whoever doesn't do what I say when I say it and overload their PCs with nasty EXEs and all that...

Just kidding...

I see what you mean, I just wish the quote box was less ugly... T_T

Just for information, but when someone quotes a post with an image, it look may untidy but it doesn't generally substantially affect bandwidth. Your browser only loads the image once and displays it from its own cache as many times as needed.

So from a technical point of view, including images in quotes wastes a few bytes of hard disk space (1 byte per character).

But then, why do so many people feel the need to quote previous post at all? Its just above, isn't it? I can see the point of quoting a selected sentence or two, if that is the specific reason for the new post. Or if the new post has crossed onto a new page, perhaps. Or if it is several posts above.

But why repeat the entire thing?

So perhaps the repeated pictures are just an aspect of the underlying problem?

I never  quote when someone has posted above me. But if anyone has it, so do I replace my IMG code writing IMAGE there instead. For then I save others for all the scrolling you have to do down the page.

Hi McG.. well basically the same applies.. If you dont need the images, it's best to remove them.. saves unnecessary scrolling and frustration.  :)

Unless ofcourse the picture is integral to your reply to the quote. In which case, you'd leave it/them in.. since they're relevant.  ;D

I know from other forums that they implented a code, which converts the IMG code to a URL when a message is quoted.. Instead of a picture, you see the url

Oh Fred, come on- One should not commit murder, but it happens an awful lot (maybe not on the forum though  ;))

Hello Doc. 2 reasons- one, if you are refering to anything than the immediate preceeding post, it can sometimes make even less sense than it never does in the first place if one does refrain from omitting the previous quotes.

Secondly, there are many people who delete their original post if you refer to something in it, which again can make things seem even less sense than above, and on occasions has even made it look like you are referring to a different post.

And you can quote me on that!

How lazy are we these days to not use our middle finger to scroll because of an image?
