The greatest Titanic movie, EVER!!!!
« on: August 13, 2007, 13:10:22 »

Titanic - A Night To Remember (1958) is the best in my option :), even if I haven't seen the whole movie, I have seen the trailer on YouTube :). Then I saw how GREAT the movie was!

It's ok, I saw it a long time ago and thought it was average.  I still prefer the James Cameron movie, but I am a fan of Cameron anyway :D

The Abyss, Terminator.....to name 2 of his movies ;D

If Stu calls me sad, I may need to get my BIG gun again ;) :P

I agree, it's my favourite Titanic film too. A couple of inaccuracies of course - but that's only because they didn't know back then what we know now.

All in all, a fantastic film - not quite as dramatic and not as many special effects - but then there's 40 years and a huge budget separating the two films.

I will never forget Murdoch's look in "Titanic - A Night To Remember" (1958) when he saw Titanic approaching the iceberg...

He looked just like this: :o

If I were Murdoch when he saw the iceberg, I would NOT have resersed the engines, I would STOP the engines and turn the helm maximum to port, then I think she (Titanic) would clear the iceberg easily :).

That was a good idea :), keep full ahead and turn maximum to port? Yes, that would do it :)! Wonder why Murdoch didn't do that ????

1. Sees iceberg

2. Turn's helm maximum to port

3. Keeps engines full ahead

4. Clears iceberg :D

Like this :-\?

Would probably clear the iceberg, or, crash into it? No, they would make it :).

How can you possibly monitor EVERY lifeboat? Besides, the initial logic (so it is reckoned) was to load the lifeboats relatively empty so that they could pick survivors out of the water.

At least the passengers had a chance of getting off - some immigrant workers such as kitchen staff were locked in so they couldn't get out - condemned to die.

The Titanic had approximately 37 seconds before impact. A similar experiment conducted on Olympic after the incident showed that the Titanic had about enough time to turn 2 points - regardless of engine status.

Or since the centre prop provided much of the water going over the rudder, which depended on waste steam from the outer props, why not run the port engine astern and the starboard ahead (leaving the starboard engine going would provide steam to keep the centre prop turning).

As for Murdoch, I seem to recall that he was hailed as a hero, giving his life for his passengers and crew. Despite the scene in that awful cameron film, there is no evidence that Murdoch murdered anyone.

And as for his professional action before the impact- perhaps he expected the lookouts do be doing their jobs properly rather than giving him less than a minutes notice to turn 45000+ tonnes of iron out the way. And as Orinoco says, once it was that close all they could do was to try and minimise the impact to try and keep the ship afloat.
