First winter storm for Ontario
« on: December 09, 2009, 02:18:39 »

Well, it's almost here...

Ontario is going to experience it's first winter storm of the year beginning tonight with periods of snow, followed by rain in the afternoon, and then changing back to snow on Wednesday evening.  Currently right now, the storm front is within the US, but it will breach the Canadian border soon.

Capt J, if you get 30cm of snow, you don't go to school... Here in Britain, if we get 3cm of snow, the country stops. Full stop.

I assume your news includes extracts from what's going on here, just as OUR international news tells us about you... I love going to other countries and watching the news... "and finally, now to Britain, former administrating country of the Empire...Inventor of nearly everything... The inventor of modern parliments... They can't even afford salt for the road and are asking Bob Mugabe for financial advice.

Snow is good...

But Snow is bad...
Clearly a decisive view on the subject...

Who is Bob Mugabe?
Robert Mugabe is the 'leader' of Rhodesia, or Zimbabwe as it's currently known. He has tried to socially engineer situations that have effectively bankrupted the country. He is a fascist (and for those who don't know, fascist is NOT the same as racist, although R.M. is also racist too) and has implemented far right policies with a view of destroying any opposition.

Although he is at the pretty extreme end (I have distant family there), he is hardly alone in it. To a *MUCH* lesser extent, we are seeing a similar manifestation here... Nowhere near as extreme, but similarly principled.

I cannot believe this.  Today is once again a snow day for Gravenhurst, which means that we've had three snow days in a row in a single week.  This has never happened here before, or last year.

Hmmm...

Last December I was in Detroit and it snowed. I went up to Toronto and then on to Ontario, towrds New Brunswick. And it snowed for a couple of days at least. Then I went home and it rained. As it always does here.

This year we have had rain and winds and winds and winds with rain and winds. My wife (From near New Brunswick, but in New Jersey) said she had never encountered winds like this. But then, she had never been to Selsey before she married me!

See now if you had been in England with the snow, it would have been:

Quote
Last December I was in English Town A and it snowed. I then couldn't get up to English Town B due to a small level of snow. And it snowed for a couple of days at least. Then it rained. As it always does here, and I still couldn't get to English Town B

Not so much. She says there is no weather here. It is almost constant temperature, with rain and wind and brief glimpses of sun all year round. The only way she can tell it's winter is because the rain gets darker earlier.

enjoy it while you can, schools have a certain number of snow days and when they're gone you start loosing vacation days.

Erm, I think it was because the Local Authorities were caught out by the prolonged cold spell and were running very low on salt supplies.

The Government did not run out of money; it was due to the bad planning and incompetence of the Local Authorities that allowed this situation to happen. We've been having mild winters for the past few years, so obviously last winter they thought it would be another warm winter, so didn't think it was necessary to stockpile plenty of grit salt in advance. (possibly in order to save money)

p.s. you are right about one thing - a few centimetres of snow and the country is brought to a standstill   ::)

I really do envy you, Dr. I wish I could manage to find the time to constantly travel around the world. Do you sleep between running business, catching 'planes, programming computers and posting here? Can I interest you in buying my company and I'll disappear around the world on my boat?

On the subject of global warming,  :sleepy:. Has anyone managed to stay awake and watch the news from Copenhagen, where these self appointed, self right, arrogant prigs (no, that isn't swearing before you ask) decide to levy new taxes on us for the privelage of breathing... when they all arrive by jet and live in 5* hotels with a carbon footprint the size of a 'very large booted bloke who has just stood in coal dust'.

The rattle on abour polar bears being stranded on floating ice (we've all seen the picture of that poor bear pining for solid ice)... PBs can SWIM. and what on earth do you think the cameraman was standing on at the time? A new film is needed. Made by Al Bore, it is called "A convenient lie". All species must adapt to the environment or die. Humans, polar bears, monkeys, marmiteans, Wavemusics and the loch ness monster... Or IS a wavemusic also the loch ness monster???

Kevin... I put it a little more bluntly and less diplomatically (uncharacteristic of me, I know)... I know what I'm talking about with the Highways agency and LAs as I have the distinct pleasure of having to work with them in one form or another nearly every blasted day. Have you not asked yourself WHY they didn't stockpile enough salt? The Met office was forecasting it quite well, actually.

So, I take your point that the Government (praise be upon it) didn't completely run out of money (they have borrowed £148 billion from our cousins around the world, via the world bank) they have overdraft facilities. However, the LAs have been so starved of cash that they can't afford it. Why are they starved of cash? Well, I think such political discussions are beyond the remit of shipsim forum! However we can continue this discussion at www.wearescrewed.co.uk

I know, the irony is not lost on this one. How can they preach us about Global Warming and cutting back on Co2 etc when hundreds of delegates flew in from other side of the world? The cars used to bring them to the conference? That plus the world media. Talking about the pot calling the kettle black!  >:(

As for LAs moaning about not having enough money, perhaps if they don't spend so much on management salaries (some of them earn more than Cabinet Members & the Prime Minister!  :o), outsourcing IT/services (often with disastrous financial consequences), issue gagging court orders to prevent the press from reporting dodgy Municipal going-ons, spending on consultancy fees, the "blue-sky thinking" events that serves no useful purpose, bumper pay-offs (plus enhanced pension package) to senior management who were sacked as a result of doing a poor job......I could go on.

Do you read Private Eye? They keep tabs on naughty LAs and you'll see how much public money were wasted which otherwise would have gone into frontline services. Perhaps a certain Mr Darling read Private Eye as well, and that's why he don't give them enough money  ;)
