Help - Computer Problems
« on: December 07, 2009, 17:28:04 »

Hi,

My Mums PC has stopped working  :'(

She switched it on and nothing happened other then the Computer itself made a high-pitch squeaking sound, possibly beeping...

Any ideas what could be wrong?

Thanks

Could be anything. If it is beeping, count the beeps and let me know. In failure mode, many PCs emit a sequence of beeps to indicate the problem.

OK. It depends on which BIOS it has.

If it is an AMI BIOS or PHOENIX (very common),  3 short beeps means "Base 64K RAM failure". IE you have a RAM problem. Could just be that a memory stick has become dislodged or may have gone kaput. Try re-seating the memory sticks (if you are competent to open the PC). With a PHOENIX BIOS this would mean row 1 is the one, but AMI does not tell you which one is the problem.

If it is an AST BIOS or MYLEX BIOS (not very common but possible), three short beeps means "Keyboard controller reset failed (POST 3)". Probably the motherboard is faulty and unlikely to be fixable.

No problem, TFM.

I hope it is just a re-seating of the memory sticks. That is surprisingly common.

Since you asked, I'd guess it was a problem with your monitor. That's why they supplied a new one.

But it doesn't seem very important to me, seeing as you don't have a problem.
