2 cores? Ship Sim can only run on one core.

Mind posting your DXDIAG?

It can be obtained by following these instructions:

Click Start > Run. type in dxdiag and press Enter.  You may see a popup asking about WHQL drivers, click Yes/Ok to proceed.

In the window that appears, click the button that says Save All Information, when the Save Dialog box appears, save the file to your desktop.  To upload the file here, click Additional Options underneath the reply area and choose Browse near Attach.  Browse to your desktop, click the file and click Open.

*  Windows Vista users need to press the Windows Key + R to access the Run prompt.

You can then post your reply with the file attached.

Can you attach the file, that doesn't give me information on graphics cards.

In short, no. I don't know if there is a rule that says it is % efficient, but it isn't 2 for the price of 2. Maybe 1.6 for the price of 2 for example.

It is somewhat like putting two women to work making a baby, and expecting to have it in 4 ½ months.
Unless the operating system or the program can divide the load among the cores, only one will be used.
SS can do that only to a limited extent.

my comp has 2 CPU's one 1.8 Ghz and the other 1.9 Ghz does this mean i have 3.7 Ghz (when the 2 cpu's add)??
cheers!

No that mean you have i dual cpu with 1,9 GHz, you only have one cpu but some games and program's take and use both cores in that possessor like SS do but you have NOT 3.7 GHz
so you cpu and graphic card are to slow for shipsim but you can try to reduce the graphic option in game and see watt happens  but i think the Intel chip sett on you laptop are to slow to run it

An intersting comparison, Marty...

Hi cargoman,
I do not think you could play SS 2008 on that computer as it does not have the minimum requirements for the game. You have 2038MB of RAM, BUT your graphics capability is with the Intel chipset and is way below that required. The graphics card is built onto your mother board and it has 0MB capability after you take away the shared  256MB. This alone brings your usable RAM below the 2000MB required. i.e. 1782MB. Vista takes a very large chunk of your computers capability just to run the operating system, never mind the game itself. Sorry to be the bringer of sad tidings.

Angus.

Hi Angus

As you know, I'd never intentionally argue with you! But... I've just checked my old laptop and it is a similar spec (less ram) and it did run it, albeit not well and only with player ship- no AI or the sea became a flat, solid colour or grid.

That said, I still agree with you that it isn't worth buying the game for that level of PC.

Hi Stuart,
I know you are not trying to make an argument. But as you say it is an "old" laptop, is it running on XP or Vista? I could understand it running the game, poorly as you say with an XP installation but not with Vista. ??? ???

Fair point Angus. It was indeed running on XP. New one runs on Vista- although I think I might change it to XP, but that's another story.

The dxdiag says that the Laptop is running at about the same as a single core processor of about 1.9GHZ
" Processor: Genuine Intel(R) CPU           T2130  @ 1.86GHz (2 CPUs), ~1.9GHz"

Of course, that's an estimate. Different uses will have different capabilities, so it is a "best guess" by Microsoft.

But, running it under Vista will slow this to a crawl, if not a crash.

By the way, is there a difference between this thread and this one?
