For anyone who wanted a simulator to simulate sinking, this 2D sinking simulator recently met its crowdfunding goal: http://www.indiegogo.com/projects/sinking-simulator

A sandbox demo is already available, while an improved, deeper version is in the works. From what I've done with it and seen done with it, it has been done well so far! The Titanic model is haphazard, but it still does a nice job, and small touches to improve its accuracy only make the simulation more closely match the latest sinking theories.

Hey, at least it's much easier to add ships to this game than it is to add them to Ship Simulator

All it takes is a 2D image to get whipped up with one pixel equal to one square meter, with various colors gaining various properties during the simulation.

Also, another bit on the subject of Sinking Simulator: I was shown this today. Take a look at the result of simply giving the (proof-of-concept but otherwise largely inaccurate) default Titanic model a set of tears that roughly replicates the original's damage, followed by tearing off one funnel:

And from my experience, making the image used more accurate only improves the likeness of the sinking process. The person who gave me that image is working on a 1:1 Titanic profile for this sandbox to see how it goes!

I first saw it on kurtjmac's channel... had alot of fun with it!

BTW Had 2 weeks straight of 80 degrees (f)+ Then two days of thunderstorms, then sadly an inbetween. (mid 50's rainy and windy)

Right now it's April weather.

Meaning the average high is 65, the average low is 45, there's very little rain (and when it does actually rain it rains for three days straight), and the buds on the trees still haven't sprouted yet.

Lucky! It's now 45^o F, and I just got back from railfanning. I'll have a new video up by the end of the month. Amazing how even an SD18 fifty feet away is enough to warm you sufficiently.

By the way, I've been thinking of getting Bioshock Infinite. How is it?

Just read a very badly translated version of the report into the sinking of the Costa Concordia, rather unsurprisingly it gives the route cause of the disaster as human error in the decision making process during the navigation of the vessel leading to the collision with the Scole Rocks off Giglio island.

While there are some interesting technical observations, I think they have missed an opportunity to seriously address the oversight of onboard management by both companies and flag / port states.

I'm surprised that they lost all the bilge pumps so quickly (could they have been located on one side of the ship?), and that she sailed with an emergency generator that was clearly broken..

Also - The weatherman lied to me. He said that temperatures would be pushing 19 degrees today.. instead I have driving rain and winds gusting at 20mph. Hmphf.

I think the issue with the emergency generator was more to do with an electrical distribution system which was underwater than any existing fault with the generator / system.

The standard survivability criteria is for passenger ships are all based on two breached watertight compartments, the damage to Concordia was way beyond this, while there will be lessons to be learnt from this which may improve things slightly in the event of a similar accident, I cannot see any way to keep a ship afloat after suffering damage such as that suffered by Costa Concordia.

What is also blatantly apparent from the report is that far from the Captain's actions in manoeuvring the ship closer to the port to aid the rescue efforts, she ended up in her final resting position by sheer luck.

I agree about her final resting place... He must have had quite some skills if he managed to manoeuvre the ship into the final position with all the main generators, the switchboard, both motors and both sets of steering gear under 10 feet of water!
Maybe he stood on the bow and parted the waters? Or stood at the stern facing away from the ship and started talking? I'm quite sure all the hot air he generates would have propelled the ship forward with more than enough force to beach it successfully

Hasn't SOLAS been updated since the disaster to require ships to be able to return to port with 2 compartments flooded?

The Safe Return to port was brought in before Concordia disaster, but I think the Spirit class of P&O Ferries are some of the first to actually utilise it? could be wrong.

5 Compartment damage is still a lot of damage to cope with.

I in know way have the SOLAS rules currently sitting on my bed by the way...
