I find that physics teach story of the bloke bounding a football on a train... he sees it up and down, where as the bloke on the platform sees it bouncing 100 yds....  :sleepy:

Silly example...

Silly example...

hehe in one book diplomatic negotions take place on a train, when the light goes on, it has to reach both sides at the same time...

A person on the platform informs them that it reaches the one first...

Yes, but those are silly examples...

If one were to say the starship galactica, driven by darth invader, had a light shining on it, whilst going into megadrive, and po spaceferries were cruising along at walking pace nearby, who would sea what light at what time and date and at what location...

Its this abandonment of absolute time.... Problem is, most people (I am included) know it only by parrotting what our physics teacher say, without REALLY understanding it..

To be honest, i doubt your physics teachers really know...

Time is a strange thing... what is time really?

It is considered the forth dimension, after x,y,z and these are spatial coordinates, so is time a length?

Another mathematical fudge, really...

Yes though you are right. Physics teachers don't know... they seem to know only what is printed in the guardian.

I don't really know... But I know enough to KNOW I don't Know... Where as most people don't know enough to know their own limitations.

It is called competent incometence opposed to incompetent incompetence.

Sums it up I think

Course If you believe in string theory, there are about 10/11 dimensions, which may be curled up around each other...

The question is indeed about belief, one of the conclusions of the special relativity theory (in French, restricted) is that no energy can go at a velocity higher than EM waves, in order to satisfy the axiom at the start, that the speed of light is the same for all observers, whatever their movement. It seems to have been abundantly proved, even if it doesn't answer some questions. But the theory seems to be operationally fully reliable.

General relativity is more an essay to understand the substance of matter (if one can say so), and the applications are at best speculations as the theory doesn't fit special relativity. But it also launched a great part of modern physics. Disagreements gave birth to quantum mechanics and many derived applications and theories. Unfortunately, the original question about gravitation and of the universe fabrics remains completely unsolved.

A pleasant site  (http://www.newtonphysics.on.ca/einstein/index.html)of a physicist exasperated by the conformism of the true believers!

Regards,
Luc

Yes, but WHY should it be the same... It makes no sense to the 'physical' world... I accept that this is true, but to understand WHY...

EDIT: Reading some of that site now, Luc...  :o

If no one sees me again, assume my brain gave up and went on holiday without me.. :D
