I've just come back in from the Marina. Took the boat out for a spin for a few hours. Get's rid of anything growing on the bottom, until she comes out in the winter

Sounds fun

See anything good whilst you were out?

Yes, We did.

A slightly smaller boat, Hardy fisher, 70 petrol outboard. We've had her up to 21 knots, but, she cruises nicely at 10-15 :)

Still miss Mary though...Was a much better boat, in my opinion - But hey, I should be grateful. Hardy's do have a reputation for being an excellent sea boat. As well as that, dad's confident enough in me to let me sail her for the vast amount of time, I enjoy it a lot.

Jack, what's the boat like in rough weather? Obviously designed as a day boat, but am really quite suprised by the speeds you say. Presumably that is only on very calm water?

I bought a small sailing yacht (24ft) and it keeps weather nicely, but 6kts is too slow to be fun, so now I'm looking at motor power... After all, do you think I'm the sort of person that will let the wind dictate to ME where and how fast

Hi Stuart,

In rough weather, she'll still go well. But generally, we don't push the boat hard (Petrol prices sky high!),

On flat waters, she'll kick out a good speed. If it's a bit choppy, you can expect that to be cut a bit. But, I wouldn't be able to tell you accurately, as I generally don't push the boat (When I'm there, anyway...) Anything over 15 knots, and it get's a little bit uncomfortable. Which isn't the point of sailing, I think.

You're not the first to be suprised by the speed it goes at  When it was RNLI day, we had some friends on another, "Top of the range" Cruiser. Quite big, too!. They flew past us, as we were just trailing behind the crowd, then once we were out of the channel, we gave it a bit of welly and cheekily waved as we went past  :D

15 kts- which is what, 19mph ish, is still pretty damned good.

I specifically didn't look at powered boats as- within the budget set- I thought they would lack speed and more importantly- range.

15 kts would put, say a Dover-Calais trip well within reach and the knowledge that A) You can escape the yacht eating ferries B)Complete in a short enough timescale to avoid long term weather changes that you would associate with my boat.

However... I wonder if I buy a 70HP o/board- or replace the pittifully poor i/board with something of that power rating (it has...ahem... 7.0 HP :-[)... You've given me a damned good idea. Thanks

Hi Stuart,

It is a good speed alright...Especially here, unfortunately, ABP won't keep a man on the gates for long enough. And we're restricted for a few hours, maximum. And they WILL shut the gates, if you don't get back in on time. You just moor up outside on a pontoon, and hope for the best! Problem is, if you don't have keels, and the tide goes out far enough - You could be in a bit of bother.

I've got no idea about the distance between Dover and Calais - Only idea is when Top Gear did that trip on the amphibious cars. It didn't take them too long.
The only draw back I can say to you is that, Small boats like Forty Winks, aren't very comfortable for long distance trips. They are generally used as, like you said, day boats. Just to get you in, and out, quickly.

Be Careful now! You wouldn't like to drill your boat into the water with all that power! ;D  :D
